A good mouse habitat starts with the right substrate. Mice like to rummage, root around, and build a warm nest. At the same time, you want to keep the habitat fresh for as long as possible. Colored mice love to root around, scratch, and build cozy nests for sleeping. Make the habitat more challenging with a substrate that supports this behavior:
- Spread deeper on a part of the cage to encourage digging and rooting behaviour.
- Extra nesting corner with tearable material: mouse nesting material .
- Hiding routes for variety, for example with tunnels and houses .
Tip: combine a “bottom zone” with a “climbing zone” (plateaus/routes), so that you offer behavior on multiple levels: plateaus & ladders .

- Weekly : partially refresh (quieter for the group than everything at once).
