What do you need for fancy mice? Complete checklist for pet mice

Fancy mouse supplies: cage, bedding, nesting material, food, and decorations Do you want to keep fancy mice and know what you really need? This checklist is intended for tame mice, also known as fancy mice. A good start consists of a safe mouse cage , low-dust mouse bedding , suitable mouse nesting material , appropriate mouse food , hiding places, tunnels, a safe exercise wheel, drinking water, gnawing material, and daily enrichment.

When it comes to fancy mice, DRD looks not only at individual products, but at how everything works together. Fancy mice are small, but their behavior is big: they want to hide, climb, nest, sniff, gnaw, run, create routes, and live together. This checklist therefore helps you not only gather what you need to buy, but, more importantly, understand the role each product plays in the enclosure.

Answer first: this is the minimum you need for fancy mice.

A safe mouse cage or enclosure with good ventilation and openings through which fancy mice cannot escape.

Low-dust bedding and soft, short nesting material to create a sheltered nest.

Multiple houses, tunnels, platforms, and routes, so that fancy mice can move safely through the enclosure.

Suitable mouse food, a feeding station, a drinking bottle or water bowl, and small extras for foraging.

A safe running wheel, gnawing material, play material, transport box, and products for daily checks and care.

Safe base

Start with an enclosure that fancy mice cannot escape, but that is well-ventilated and provides space for the bedding, routes, and furnishings.

1. A safe mouse cage or fancy mouse enclosure

The mouse cage is the foundation of everything. A good enclosure is safe, well-ventilated, and spacious enough to accommodate multiple functions: sleeping, nesting, eating, drinking, walking, climbing, hiding, running, and foraging. Pay particular attention to escape safety. Fancy mice are small and can squeeze through surprisingly narrow openings.

A fancy mouse enclosure should not remain bare. Fancy mice feel more comfortable when they have routes with cover. An open box with only a small house is insufficient. It is better to think in layers: bedding at the bottom, tunnels through the enclosure, platforms as runways, hanging spots for shelter, and multiple houses to choose from.

Check out our mouse cages for the basics. Afterwards, you can complete the setup with mouse houses , tunnels , platforms and ladders , and hammocks .

2. Bedding and nesting material for fancy mice

Good bedding for mice is low in dust, absorbent, and pleasant to walk on. Fancy mice use the bedding to sniff, move small pieces, and sometimes to process food or nesting material. Therefore, the bedding must not only remain clean but also support their behavior.

Nesting material is a true basic necessity for fancy mice. Fancy mice enjoy building a warm, sheltered nest where they can rest together. Choose nesting material that is soft, short, and easy to pull apart. Avoid long, stringy, or cotton-like fibers, as paws and tails can get caught in them.

Take scent into account when cleaning. Fancy mice use scent to recognize their surroundings and group. Therefore, it is better to clean selectively: remove wet spots and old food remnants, but do not replace everything at once every time if it is not necessary.

3. Little houses, tunnels, platforms and hangout spots

Fancy mice are prey animals and prefer not to constantly roam through open spaces. Therefore, houses , tunnels, ladders, platforms, and sheltered routes are important. It is better to provide several small hiding places than one large central spot, especially for a group of fancy mice.

Tunnels help fancy mice move safely from one place to another. Platforms and ladders make the height usable. Hammocks can provide extra resting and hiding places, provided they are securely attached and regularly checked for gnawing damage.

Check that all accessories have secure openings. Color mice must be able to pass through them without getting stuck and without sharp edges or loose parts. With multiple color mice, it is helpful to always have more than one route to important areas.

4. Mouse food, water, food bowl and small extras

Suitable mouse food forms the daily basis. You can offer food in a bowl, but fancy mice also really enjoy foraging. So feel free to scatter some through the bedding or hide small portions in a foraging spot. This way, eating immediately becomes an activity.

For water, choose a suitable water bottle or container that stands stably and is easily accessible. Check daily whether water is coming out of the bottle and whether the drinking area remains clean. For groups, a second drinking point can be useful.

Mouse snacks , herbs and seeds , and dried vegetables and fruit are extras. Use them sparingly and deliberately, for example as a reward, a sniffing stimulus, or as part of a search game.

5. Running wheel, gnawing material and foraging toys

Fancy mice are active and benefit greatly from daily enrichment. A safe mouse exercise wheel can help provide exercise. Choose a wheel with a closed running surface, stable placement, and sufficient diameter so that the mouse does not have to run with a curved back.

Chewing material is also important for mice . Fancy mice enjoy gnawing, dragging, and exploring. You can scatter small twigs, nibbles, or lightweight gnawing products throughout the enclosure so that there is something to discover in multiple places.

You make the day more interesting by playing and foraging . Think about hiding food, searching for small snacks, sniffing in a safe sniffing spot, or offering materials that your fancy mice can investigate and move.

Keeping fancy mice together: also consider group space

Fancy mice are social animals. Females, in particular, are often kept in a group. Males can be more difficult to handle among themselves, depending on temperament, age, origin, space, and setup. Therefore, make sure you are well informed about the correct group composition.

When keeping multiple fancy mice, it is important that there is enough choice: multiple houses, multiple routes, multiple hiding places, and sufficient food and water options. This prevents one spot from becoming too dominant and keeps the group calmer.

6. Care, health and transport

In addition to daily setup, you also need practical care products. Think of a safe transport crate for vet visits, moving, or temporarily isolating the animal. A transport crate is not an enclosure, but it is indispensable when you need to act quickly and calmly.

Check your fancy mice daily for behavior, activity, coat, breathing, eating, drinking, and group rest. Veterinary advice is important in case of noticeable changes, shortness of breath, lethargy, loss of appetite, or rapid deterioration. For additional support, also see mouse health and mouse care .

Practical DRD tip

Do not set up a fancy mouse enclosure as an open box with loose items, but as a network of routes. Fancy mice often use their enclosure much better when houses, tunnels, platforms, and hanging spots together form sheltered paths.

Good to know before keeping fancy mice

Fancy mice are small, but not easy.

Fancy mice have a great need for structure, cover, and variety. Therefore, a small size does not mean that the enclosure can be bare or simple.

Choose products by function

A little house is rest, a tunnel is a route, bedding is the foundation, nesting material is comfort, a running wheel is movement, and foraging is activity. This is how you build an enclosure that works logically.

Special mouse species may have different requirements.

This checklist is primarily aimed at fancy mice and general supplies for pet mice. Do you keep an African pygmy mouse, spiny mouse, dormouse, vole, or gerbil? Then also check the species information via mouse information .

Are you unsure about the right start?

It is better to choose a clear foundation first and then build from there. If you can't figure it out, you can contact us via our service page . We are happy to help you.
