Why choose flax bedding?

Flax is popular as a natural bedding because it is soft, light and absorbent. It gives the enclosure a calm, natural look and is pleasant for animals that like to walk or rest on a dry, soft surface. Because wet spots and toilet corners can be refreshed locally, flax is also practical for owners who want to keep the enclosure tidy and fresh.

At DRD, we especially look at the right product fit for each animal. For guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and chinchillas, this flax bedding can be a comfortable soft base layer or a practical filling for toilet corners. For small burrowing rodents such as mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters and gerbils, flax is best used as part of a mix. This way you combine the soft, absorbent properties of flax with extra volume and structure.

Which animals is this product suitable for?

  • Mouse: suitable as a soft top layer or as part of a mixed bedding. For more digging structure, combine flax with cotton, paper, cardboard or hay.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as mixed bedding in a deep digging layer. Flax alone usually does not provide enough stability for burrows to stay in place.
  • Hamster: suitable as an absorbent layer or as part of a structure-rich mix. For natural digging behaviour, a deep, well-built bedding layer remains important.
  • Gerbil: suitable as part of a mixed layer. Gerbils dig actively, so combine flax with sturdier materials such as hay, cardboard or another structure-rich bedding.
  • Dwarf rat: suitable as a soft base layer, dry zone or filling in a toilet corner. Also usable in a dig box when combined with other materials.
  • Rat: suitable as a soft base layer, toilet corner filling or dry zone in the enclosure. For a dig box, you can mix flax with materials that add more volume and structure.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a soft, absorbent base layer or as a layer in regular pee spots and hay areas. Regular spot-cleaning keeps the enclosure pleasantly fresh.
  • Rabbit: suitable as soft bedding or as toilet/corner filling. In larger rabbit enclosures, flax is especially practical for litter trays and regular pee spots.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a dry, soft floor layer or toilet corner filling. Combine with the normal setup such as a sand bath, hay, platforms and chew material.
  • Degu: suitable as an absorbent layer or as part of a mixed zone. For more digging and foraging structure, combine flax with hay, cardboard or other natural materials.

How to use JR Farm flax bedding

Spread the flax bedding evenly over the floor of the enclosure. For larger animals, you can use it as a soft base layer or in toilet corners. For small burrowing rodents, flax works best when mixed with another bedding that adds more volume and stability.

  • Use as a soft base layer for guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and chinchillas.
  • Use as a top layer for a natural, calm appearance.
  • Use in toilet corners or regular pee spots for extra absorption.
  • For hamsters, dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils, mix with cotton, paper, cardboard, hay or another structure-rich bedding.
  • Replace wet spots and heavily soiled areas regularly with fresh bedding.
  • Refresh the full bedding layer when the base no longer stays fresh.

DRD tip: mix for burrowing animals

Do you want to use flax for small burrowing rodents that like to make tunnels? Mix it with cotton bedding, paper bedding, cardboard or another bedding with more volume and structure. Flax is soft and absorbent, but on its own it is usually not firm enough for tunnels and burrows to hold their shape well. By mixing it, you make the base more interesting, airy and practical for animals that love to dig.

How much bedding do you need?

Use this simple calculation to estimate how many litres of bedding you need:

Formula: length × width × layer depth in cm ÷ 1000 = number of litres of bedding.

Example: an enclosure of 100 × 50 cm with a 5 cm layer requires about 25 litres of bedding. If you want to create a deeper digging layer of 20 cm, the same enclosure requires about 100 litres. For small burrowing animals, flax is therefore often used as part of a mix, not as the only deep digging bedding.

Enclosure 5 cm layer 10 cm layer 20 cm layer
60 × 40 cm 12 litres 24 litres 48 litres
80 × 40 cm 16 litres 32 litres 64 litres
100 × 50 cm 25 litres 50 litres 100 litres

Material & product details

  • Brand: JR Farm
  • Range: Nature Clean
  • Product: Flax straw / flax bedding
  • Material: flax straw
  • Content: 35 litres
  • Use: bedding, top layer, mixed bedding or toilet/corner filling

The composition is simple and natural: flax straw. This suits owners who want to make a conscious choice for a clear, plant-based bedding without unnecessary additions.

Good to know

Flax is soft and absorbent, but not equally firm for every type of use. For animals that mainly need a comfortable walking, resting or toilet layer, this is exactly what makes it pleasant. For animals that want to build tunnels, you can make the bedding stronger by mixing it with materials that add more structure.

  • Check during first use how your animal uses the bedding.
  • Replace wet spots and toilet corners regularly.
  • Store the pack in a dry place.
  • With long-haired animals, fine material can sometimes cling to the coat more easily; in that case, consider a coarser top layer on resting spots.

Frequently asked questions

Is flax bedding suitable for hamsters?

Yes, but mainly as part of a mixed bedding. For hamsters and dwarf hamsters, a deep, stable digging layer is important. Mix flax with cotton, paper, cardboard or hay for more structure.

Do burrows stay in place in flax?

In flax alone, burrows usually do not hold their shape as well. Flax is especially strong in softness and absorption. For tunnel stability, it is better to combine it with bedding that adds more volume and firmness.

Can I use flax for guinea pigs and rabbits?

Yes, flax is pleasant as a soft, absorbent base layer or as toilet/corner filling. Keep regular pee spots clean to help the enclosure stay fresh and comfortable.

How often should I replace the bedding?

Replace wet spots, toilet corners and heavily soiled areas regularly. Refresh the complete base layer once it no longer stays fresh.
