Guinea pigs need clean and fresh drinking water every day. There are many different types and sizes of drinking bottles. Choosing the right drinking bottle is not always easy. A larger drinking bottle does not mean that it no longer needs to be changed. The water has to be changed daily for the animals.
If you have a larger guinea pig group, a larger drinking bottle is recommended, so that there is enough drink for all group members. A small drinking bottle can run out too quickly in a large group.
The most well-known way of giving water is the drinking bottle. This is easy to attach to the enclosure and gives the guinea pigs access to their drink throughout the day.
Did you know?
Do guinea pigs drink between 100 and 400 ml on average?
So there are quite large differences in drinking behavior among guinea pigs. Drinking behavior is mainly influenced by diet. A guinea pig that has eaten a lot of hay and/or dry food will drink more and a guinea pig that has had more green food will drink less.
A drinking bottle is also very hygienic, as no dirt can get into it. It is very important that the drinking bottle is cleaned regularly, otherwise algae and bacteria can grow in it. These micro-organisms are harmful to the health of guinea pigs.
✔ Hygienic
✔Always access to water
✔ Controllable water intake
Another great advantage of a drinking bottle is that you can control the water intake. So you can see how much your guinea pigs drink and that is important to keep an eye on their health. Animals that are sick and no longer drink are especially vulnerable and can quickly endanger their lives due to dehydration.
