What is the best exercise wheel material for Gerbils?

Gerbil running wheel and running wheel that is gnaw-resistant Gerbils are real rodents as we know, they will like to gnaw on parts of their enclosure. To prevent this, we always recommend sufficient gnawing material, but unfortunately it is not possible to completely prevent these little rascals. To make the accommodation as safe as possible for the Gerbils, it is of course important that the running wheel is also safe. We believe that a plastic running wheel is not safe for Gerbils. The animals can gnaw on a plastic running wheel and get hurt on any splinters. Wooden running wheels are preferred for Gerbils. If desired, the animals can nibble on it a bit without doing any harm. A wooden running wheel will have to be replaced regularly, if we prefer not to have this, a metal running wheel can be recommended, for example an aluminum running wheel . These last a lifetime, are safe and are 100% gnaw resistant!

Which Exercise Wheels Are Unsafe for Gerbils?

It is important to keep in mind that Gerbils are pack animals. Even if they don't all fit in a running wheel at the same time, they will try. It is therefore important that running wheels for Gerbils are completely open at the front. A running wheel with a beam at the front rotating or a partition in front can cause serious injuries if it hits an animal. This can happen if one animal runs in the running wheel and another animal wants to join it. Fortunately, we do not have such walking wheels for Gerbils. All exercise wheels listed in this category are safe for Gerbils.

How should you clean a Wooden Exercise Wheel for Gerbils?

It was always a challenge to clean a wooden running wheel, but fortunately that is a thing of the past. Nowadays there are two types of cleaning agents that can be used to easily clean wooden running wheels. A urine spray can help with this. This breaks down urine.

Can you wash Gerbil exercise wheels in water?

No! It is not good for all running wheels to rinse them completely under the tap. It is very important that the rotating mechanism (ball bearing) does not get wet. The more often the rotating mechanism is flushed, the stiffer it becomes. This can make it squeak earlier and run stiffer.

We do not recommend washing wooden running wheels with water. Wiping with a damp cloth is no problem, but it is not good for the wheels to get them completely wet. By wetting the running wheel, the glue can come off.

What to do if a running wheel squeaks?

A running wheel can make more noise over time. For a squeaky running wheel, we recommend a drop of olive oil. This can be mounted on the turning mechanism.
