Mouse bedding – dust-free, absorbent & great for digging

Mouse bedding - two colored mice digging in cotton bedding A good mouse habitat starts with the right substrate. Mice like to rummage, root around, and build a warm nest. At the same time, you want to keep the habitat fresh for as long as possible. In this category, you'll find a carefully selected range of mouse substrates: low-dust, comfortable, and highly absorbent. Practical, safe, and tailored to natural behavior (digging, nesting, searching, and resting). Specialists since 2011, so you can choose with confidence and with help.

Dust-free & comfortable

Mice have sensitive respiratory tracts. Choose a substrate that feels comfortable and is dust-free. Combine it with nesting material for a warm, tear-resistant nest.

Odor-binding & absorbent

A good substrate helps absorb moisture and odors. Use clever "toilet areas" and fresh bedding, and complete the enclosure with food bowls and water bottles/bowls .

Smart cleaning

Keeping your cage clean and fresh is easier with a good foundation and practical accessories. Combine bedding with cage accessories and handy care products.

Which substrate suits your mice?

Not every mouse uses the substrate in the same way. Some primarily dig, while others prefer to nest in soft layers. That's why you'll find several types of substrate in this category. When choosing, pay particular attention to:

  • Low dust – gentle on sensitive airways.
  • Absorption – helps bind moisture and keep the room fresh for longer.
  • Structure – good for digging, building nests and scratching.

Tip: Create zones in the enclosure. For example, a "dry base layer" and a "nesting area" with extra soft material. This way, mice can choose what feels comfortable for them.

Odour & absorption: how to keep your home fresh for longer

Mice are active and love to mark. A smart substrate and routine helps control odors without having to clean them thoroughly every time:

  • Remove wet spots and “corners” daily (spot-clean).
  • Replace part of the substrate weekly (not all at once).
  • Use multiple water points to reduce spills: water bottles and water bowls .

Bonus tip: Add enrichment to areas that are easy to clean, so mice will enjoy those areas. Check out play & foraging for clever "search moments."

Digging & Nesting: Natural Behavior Starts with the Right Layers

Colored mice love to root around, scratch, and build cozy nests for sleeping. Make the habitat more challenging with a substrate that supports this behavior:

  • Spread deeper on a part of the cage to encourage digging and rooting behaviour.
  • Extra nesting corner with tearable material: mouse nesting material .
  • Hiding routes for variety, for example with tunnels and houses .

Tip: combine a “bottom zone” with a “climbing zone” (plateaus/routes), so that you offer behavior on multiple levels: plateaus & ladders .

Maintenance & hygiene

  • Daily : remove wet spots, change the water and check food remains.
  • Weekly : partially refresh (quieter for the group than everything at once).
  • Clean water points extra well: drinking bottles and water bowls .
  • Useful tools and care products can be found at: mouse care .

Checklist: ensure your mouse bedding is properly arranged

Please review this list for your (new) base structure:

Low-dust floor covering chosen for daily comfort
Extra nesting corner with soft material: nesting material
Multiple shelters (peace and safety): houses
Food and water points are stable: food bowls and drinking bottles/water bowls
Enrichment added in “easy to clean” areas: play & foraging
You have a simple cleaning routine (spot clean + partial refresh)

Safety warnings

  • Preferably choose a bedding that is low in dust and pleasant to the touch; excessive dust can irritate the respiratory tract.
  • Avoid strongly scented products; mice have sensitive noses and a "fresh smell" isn't always more pleasant for them.
  • Always check bedding for damp patches and replace wet material promptly to prevent mold formation.
  • Do you notice shortness of breath, lethargy, or a suddenly dirty coat? If in doubt, contact a veterinarian.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Mouse Bedding

What's more important: absorbency or softness?
Ideally, you should combine both. Choose a good base with absorption and create a soft nesting area with nesting material . This way, the habitat stays fresh and comfortable.

How often should I change bedding?
Spot clean daily and refresh a portion weekly. How often you need to refresh the filter depends on the group size, ventilation, and your routine. A consistent approach usually works best.

Can I combine ground covers?
Yes, that can actually be helpful. Consider a base layer for absorption and a nesting/rummaging layer for structure. Always observe how your mice use it and adjust as needed.

What else helps against odor?
A smart design with designated areas for food and water helps minimize spills. Also check out cage accessories and cleaning/tools under Care .

Where can I find all the mouse information and selection help?
See Mice information for further explanation about housing, behavior, and care.
