Degoe hay racks and hay bags – clean hay, less waste and smart enrichment

Degoe hay racks & hay bags – clean hay, less waste and extra enrichment

Hay is a staple for degus: it should always be available. Not only because degus love to nibble, but also because hay helps the enclosure function naturally: your animals are busy, searching out their favorite stalks, and often use it as part of their resting spot. A good hay rack or hay bag also keeps the hay cleaner and more organized, reducing waste and keeping the enclosure neater. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we select hay racks that are practical to use, fit naturally into a degu enclosure, and are suitable for real rodents. Always combine hay racks with good hay from our Degu hay category and complete the setup with Degu gnawing materials and Degu play & foraging .

Rodent-resistant: aluminum/metal (recommended)
Degus love to gnaw. That's why a gnaw-resistant feeder is often the most carefree choice: durable, sturdy, and easy to clean.

Aluminum hay rack 20 cm (100% gnaw-proof) →
Hanging metal hay rack 20 cm (100% gnaw-proof) →
Standing trough with roof (neat & stable)
Ideal if you want to create a permanent hay storage area. The roof helps keep the hay contained, and the manger is securely placed in the enclosure.

Metal hay rack standing with roof 20 cm →
Hay bags & enrichment racks (active eating)
For an extra challenge: let degus "work out" the hay. This is useful if you'd like to enrich their habitat with feeding stations and variety.

Why a hay rack or hay bag for degus?

Loose hay on the floor quickly becomes dirty, damp, or drips throughout the enclosure. With a hay rack or hay bag, you can offer hay in a fixed, clean spot . This gives you a clear overview (less mess, less waste) and provides your degus with a designated feeding and snacking zone. Many customers even choose multiple hay stations : one fixed rack and one additional enrichment station. This encourages natural foraging behavior and helps make your enclosure more interesting, along with tunnels and houses .

What should you pay attention to with degu hay racks?

Degus are rodents, so the choice of materials is crucial. Aluminum and metal are often the most durable and stay clean for a long time. Wood looks natural, but can be damaged more easily by avid rodents. Also, pay attention to: stable placement (don't wobble), easy filling , and a design that complements your decor (wall-mounted, hanging, standing). If you really want to be competitive, choose a rodent-proof feeder as the base and add an enrichment option if necessary.

Hanging, wall-mounted, standing or enrichment: what suits your stay?

A wall-mounted or hanging feeder saves floor space and keeps the ground clear. A standing feeder is ideal if you want to create a permanent "hay area." For enrichment, there are playful solutions like a hay roll or snack/spiral holders, so degus can actively consume their hay. And if you want a multifunctional area (for example, feeding several animals simultaneously), a 27 cm wooden group feeder can be a useful part of your feeding zone.

Checklist

Make sure hay is always available (preferably in a fixed, clean place).
For real rodents, preferably choose gnaw-proof aluminum/metal as the basic feeder.
Pay attention to stable placement and ease of filling (especially with daily refilling).
Consider two hay stations : one fixed hay rack + one enrichment option.
Combine with foraging and gnawing material for a rich habitat.

Maintenance

Change hay daily or as soon as it becomes visibly soiled/damp.
Clean the troughs/bags weekly (wipe them or follow the product instructions).
Check hanging and wall grapes for firm attachment and wear.
Preferably do not place the hay area in the "pee zone" of the enclosure.

FAQ

Why is a gnaw-proof hay rack such a good choice for degus?
Degus love to gnaw. Aluminum and metal stay clean longer, are durable, and easy to clean. This prevents a lot of "gnawing" and saves money in the long run.

Hanging or standing: which is better?
That depends on your accommodation. Hanging/wall-mounted saves space and keeps the floor clear. Standing is very stable and works well as a permanent haying area. Many customers combine both for variety.

Can I also use hay as enrichment?
Absolutely. Use an extra hay rack, hay roll, or treat holder and combine it with playing and foraging for more searching behavior and challenge.
