Why a water bottle is such a great base

Water in an enclosure can quickly become contaminated by bedding, hay, or food. A water bottle generally keeps the water cleaner and gives your pets a designated place to drink. Many owners also appreciate being able to see at a glance if the water level changes.

Offering water: drinking bottle, water bowl or both?

The most common method is the water bottle: easy to attach and often neater for daily use. In some situations, owners also opt for a water bowl, for example, in a run or as an additional option in a spacious enclosure.

  • Drinking bottle : clean, tidy and securely placed.
  • Water bowl : easy to access, but can get dirty or spill more quickly.

Tip: Whatever you choose, change the water regularly and position it so that as little ground cover as possible can get into it.

How to choose the right drinking bottle

Choosing the right water bottle depends on three things: size , spout , and attachment . Here are the most important choices:

1) Volume (ml) – appropriate for your animal
Smaller animals usually need a compact bottle; for guinea pigs and rabbits, a larger model is more practical so you don't have to refill it unnecessarily often.

2) Drinking spout & flow
A good spout allows for smooth, drip-free drinking. Always check new bottles to ensure the water is flowing freely (and that it doesn't continue to leak).

3) Confirmation
Choose a bottle that hangs securely on bars or can be placed firmly against the glass (for terrariums). A stable bottle prevents spills and irritation.

Placement in the enclosure: small detail, big effect

  • Hang the bottle at a comfortable height : your animal should be able to drink in a relaxed manner.
  • Preferably place it in a quiet place (not in the middle of a busy "race track").
  • Make sure the spout is easily accessible and not stuck against a house or plateau.
  • Do you have multiple animals? Consider adding an extra watering station for more peace and quiet.

How much do rodents and rabbits drink approximately?

How much your pet drinks varies significantly depending on the species, weight, temperature, and diet (for example, more dry food versus lots of fresh vegetables). As a general guideline, you often see these kinds of orders of magnitude:

  • Mouse / hamster / gerbil : often a few to tens of ml per day (small sips spread over the day).
  • Rat / guinea pig : usually more, often tens of ml to around 100 ml per day.
  • Rabbit : can clearly drink more, especially with dry food or warm weather.

More important than the exact number: pay attention to changes in feeding habits. If your pet suddenly drinks much less or not at all, check if the bottle is working properly and, if in doubt, consult a veterinarian.

Cleaning & maintenance

How to keep your water bottles fresh and reliable:

  • Change water regularly (especially in warmer weather).
  • Clean the bottle with warm water and a bottle/spout brush; rinse well.
  • Check the spout for flow and any drips.
  • Replace parts if they wear out or no longer close properly.

Checklist: Choosing the right water bottle in 20 seconds

Is the volume right for your animal (and how often you want to refill)?

Is the drinking spout comfortable and does the water flow well?

Is the mounting suitable for your enclosure (bars/glass/terrarium)?

Does the bottle hang stably, without sliding or tilting?

Is it easy to clean (including the spout)?

Safety: what to pay attention to

  • Check regularly that the bottle is not leaking and that the spout is flowing properly.
  • Hang the bottle so that your pet can drink relaxed (not too high or too low).
  • Pay attention to wear and tear on the spout, cap or holder and replace parts in time.
  • For groups or multiple animals, it is better to use an additional drinking place for more peace and quiet.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about water bottles

My water bottle is dripping, what can I do?
First, check that the bottle is securely attached, the cap closes properly, and the spout is clean. A quick test over the sink will quickly reveal if the problem persists.

How often should I clean a water bottle?
Regular cleaning is wise, especially if you see buildup. A spout brush will also help you get into those tricky corners.

Is one drinking bottle enough for several animals?
That's possible, but in many enclosures, an additional drinking station is more convenient. This way, each animal can drink at its own time.

Can I use a drinking bottle in a terrarium?
Yes, provided you use a suitable mounting system (e.g., a sturdy holder/stand). Place it securely and check the flow.
