Start with hay, appropriate degu food, and a quiet snack routine. Herbs and flowers are particularly interesting as variety and a foraging layer.

Feeding degus requires calm and clarity. Degus are herbivores and thrive best on a fiber-rich routine with sufficient hay and appropriate degu food. Therefore, it is better to choose specific degu food or degu pellets rather than random rodent mixes.
Degu hay is important for fiber, activity, and natural tooth wear. You can create a permanent hay corner with a degu hay rack and a sturdy feeder so that the feeding area remains organized.
Degu herbs , fresh degu herbs , and dried flowers are especially nice as fragrant variety, a foraging layer, or a small addition. We keep the explanation deliberately practical: herbs are not medicine, but they can help make the daily diet more interesting.
Degu enclosure: digging floor, climbing routes and safe setup
A degu enclosure works best when built in zones. At the bottom, create a diggable floor with degu bedding . Above that, build sturdy routes using degu platforms and ladders . This allows the animals to move around, maintain an overview, and avoid each other when necessary.
Always place heavy items stably on the bottom or on a sturdy platform, not loosely on top of a thick layer of bedding. Degus like to dig and destroy things; as a result, something that seems sturdy today may still sink later. Therefore, regularly check whether houses, stone bowls, food bowls, and platforms are still standing stably.

Degoe sand bath: grooming and activity in one
Degus enjoy bathing in fine sand. A degu sandbox with suitable sand helps keep their fur clean and provides extra activity at the same time. Preferably choose a sturdy, heavy box that does not tip over easily when the degus roll around in it.
Place the sand bath on a stable spot and keep it clean. Many owners offer the sand bath at fixed times or place it in a separate zone so that the rest of the enclosure remains tidy. If the sand is used as a toilet area, sifting or replacing it more frequently is advisable.
Enrichment for degus: gnawing, searching, climbing, and playing together
Degus are curious and active. Enrichment is therefore not an extra, but an important part of their enclosure. With degu gnawing material , degu tunnels , degu houses , and degu play & foraging, you give them multiple ways to expend their energy.
A degu exercise wheel can be a nice addition provided it is large enough and runs safely. Pay attention to a generous diameter, a closed running surface, and stable placement. The exercise wheel does not replace a well-designed enclosure, but it can provide extra exercise.

Social animals
Degus are social animals. Therefore, do not keep them alone, but ensure an appropriate group composition and sufficient space, hiding places, and feeding areas so that the animals can also avoid each other.
Food without unnecessary sugar
Degus are sensitive to food that is too high in energy, too fatty, or too high in sugar. Therefore, choose appropriate degu food, hay, and controlled supplements. Fruit and sugary snacks do not fit well into a degu's routine.
Chew-proof thinking
Degus gnaw a lot. In practice, glass, stone, ceramic, metal, and sturdy wood are often more logical than plastic. Check accessories regularly for wear and tear and place heavy parts securely.
Rules in the Netherlands
The list of domestic and hobby animals has applied to the Netherlands since July 1, 2024. The degu is not on this list. If you already have degus under transitional law, proper care naturally remains important. In case of doubt, always check the current information from the government, for example via the RVO or the NVWA .

Can degus be kept alone?
No, degus are social animals and belong together with other degus. However, ensure an appropriate group composition, multiple hiding places, and sufficient space to provide rest and escape routes.
Why is gnawing material important for degus?
Degus enjoy gnawing and use their teeth a lot. Gnawing material provides activity and helps give natural gnawing behavior a proper place in the enclosure.
Which enclosure is suitable for degus?
