Product description

Little One Chinchilla Bath Sand 1 kg – fine zeolite sand for sand baths and coat care

Little One Chinchilla Bath Sand is fine zeolite bath sand for animals that enjoy rolling, digging, and bathing in sand. A good sand bath is especially important for chinchillas and degus, but dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils also like to use sand to groom their fur and display natural behavior.

At DRD, when it comes to bath sand, we focus primarily on the correct application for each animal. This sand is suitable for dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, and degus. We do not recommend this bath sand for mice and rats, as they may be more sensitive to fine dust particles. For guinea pigs and rabbits, a sand bath has no clear function in daily care.

Why choose Little One Bath Sand?

For many small rodents, a sand bath is more than just a container of sand. Animals can roll, dig, turn, rub, and groom their fur in it. Chinchillas and degus, in particular, need a sand bath to properly maintain their dense coats. Dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils also enjoy using sand as a regular grooming spot or sand zone in their enclosure.

Little One Chinchilla Bath Sand consists of zeolite. This natural mineral has a fine structure and is used because it can absorb moisture and oil from the fur. As a result, the sand remains suitable for animals that need a dry sand bath instead of water.

Moreover, a sand zone is very valuable for hamsterscaping and gerbilscaping. Your animal gets a different surface structure than the digging substrate, giving the enclosure more variety. A sand bath can serve simultaneously as a grooming area, a sniffing spot, and a natural scaping element.

For which animals is Little One Chinchilla Bath Sand suitable?

  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as a sand bath and sand zone in the enclosure. Dwarf hamsters enjoy using sand to roll, dig, and groom their fur.
  • Hamster: suitable as a sand bath or enclosed sand area. Choose a sand bath size in which your hamster can comfortably turn and roll.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a sand bath and enrichment. Gerbils love using sand to roll, dig, and keep their fur fresh.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as bath sand for regular grooming. Chinchillas need a spacious sand bath in which they can roll around properly.
  • Degu: suitable as a sand bath. Degus enjoy rolling in sand and benefit from a permanent, dry sandy area in the enclosure.

We do not recommend this bath sand for mice and rats due to their more sensitive airways. For guinea pigs and rabbits, a sand bath has no clear grooming function; for these animals, you are better off choosing suitable bedding, litter bedding, or another form of enrichment.

Usage & layer thickness

Use Little One Chinchilla Bath Sand in a suitable sandbox or enclosed sand zone. The manufacturer recommends a layer of approximately 3 to 5 cm. This ensures your animal has enough sand to roll, dig, and turn in.

For chinchillas, a bathing session of approximately 30 minutes is recommended. During high humidity or warmer periods, bathing may be necessary more frequently. For hamsters, dwarf hamsters, and gerbils, you can usually provide the sand in a permanent sand bath, as long as the sand remains clean and dry.

A spacious, sturdy sand bath works best for degus. Check regularly to ensure the sand is clean and free of food remnants, droppings, or wet spots.

How often do you need to replace the sand?

Sift the sand regularly to remove droppings, bedding, and loose debris. Replace the sand completely as soon as it is dirty, damp, or less fresh. How often this is necessary depends on the animal species, the number of animals, the size of the sandbox, and whether your animal also uses the sandbox as a toilet area.

Is the sandbox being used as a toilet? Then you need to replace the sand more often. Keep the sand area dry and clean so that your animal continues to enjoy rolling and bathing in it.

Choosing a sandbox: what to look for?

Choose a sandbox that suits the size and behavior of your animal. A dwarf hamster needs a different sandbox than a chinchilla or degu. It is important that your animal can comfortably turn and roll around, and easily get out of the sandbox again.

For hamsters and gerbils, a ceramic, glass, or wooden sand bath can often be beautifully incorporated into a natural-looking setup. For chinchillas and degus, it is preferable to choose a more spacious, sturdy sand bath or bird bath where the animal can safely roll without the sand immediately spreading throughout the enclosure.

Material/composition

Material/composition: zeolite, also known as volcanic mineral.

Contents: approx. 1 kg.

Zeolite has a fine, mineral structure and is used as bath sand for animals that groom their coats dry. The sand is intended for dry use; do not wet it or mix it with water.

Good to know

Always use bath sand dry and in a suitable sandbox. Gently observe how your animal interacts with it during the first use. Some animals roll around enthusiastically right away, while others need to discover what the sand spot is for first.

Preferably place the sandbox on a stable spot and prevent large amounts of bedding, food, or water from getting into it. This way, the sand will stay clean and pleasant to use for longer.
