Rabbit hay racks: neat, clean and always available hay
A hay rack for rabbits is one of the most useful (and rabbit-proof) basics in a rabbit enclosure. Hay is essential for daily dental and digestive health, and with a good hay rack, you can offer it in a way rabbits prefer: accessible, organized, and without it spreading throughout the enclosure.
Why a hay rack for your rabbit?
Loose hay in the enclosure sounds convenient, but rabbits quickly go through it. The result: hay gets dirty, spreads everywhere, and is often not eaten. A hay rack helps keep hay cleaner and reduces hay waste . That's good for both your rabbit and you.
Handy tip: hay rack above the toilet
Rabbits like to eat and defecate simultaneously. Therefore, it's wise to place a litter box under the hay rack (or mount the hay rack above the litter box). This keeps the rest of the enclosure cleaner and makes cleaning much easier.
What types of rabbit hay racks are there?
There are many different hay racks, and each one has its own advantages. Consider, for example:
- Hanging hay racks – save space and keep hay extra clean
- Hay racks for bars or walls – fixed location, stable and practical
- Standing hay racks – easy to install, often with a larger capacity
- Combinations – for example hay rack with (snack) holder or integrated functions
Tip: You can also combine the two. Give your rabbits a fixed feeder for their daily routine, and perhaps add a second (hanging) feeder for an extra challenge or variety.
