Product description

Trixie House Ila 40 cm with hay rack for guinea pigs and small rabbits

The Trixie House Ila 40 cm is a spacious wooden house with an integrated hay rack on the side. This makes this little house extra practical for guinea pigs and small rabbits/dwarf rabbits: you combine a sheltered resting place with a permanent spot for hay.

The house has an open bottom, two openings, and a flat top. Thanks to the open bottom, the house can be placed directly on the bedding. The hay rack on the side helps to offer hay in an organized manner, while allowing your animal to choose whether it wants to shelter, rest, or eat from the hay.

Why choose a house with a hay rack?

For guinea pigs and rabbits, hay is an important part of their daily routine. By combining a hay rack with a small house, a clear resting and hay area is created in the enclosure. This is convenient for the owner and provides a clear overview for the animals.

Many guinea pigs and rabbits like to eat in a fixed spot. A house with a hay rack helps to organize that spot logically: hay on the side, shelter next to it, and bedding underneath. This keeps the hay together better and creates a practical corner for rest, eating, and daily care.

The two openings ensure that animals do not have to sit in an enclosed corner. This is especially pleasant for social animals, as there is more passage and animals can pass each other more easily. However, always use this house as part of a spacious enclosure with multiple resting places, especially when multiple animals live together.

For which animals is Trixie Huis Ila suitable?

  • Guinea pigs: suitable as a hiding place, resting place, and designated hay spot. With multiple guinea pigs, it is nice to also place other hiding places so that each animal has a choice.
  • Small rabbits/dwarf rabbits: suitable as a sheltered spot with a hay rack. Always check that the opening and interior space suit the size of your rabbits.

For larger rabbits, this house may be too small to serve as a proper shelter. Therefore, always consider the size of your animals and choose a larger one if in doubt. For rats, hamsters, mice, and gerbils, a hay rack is not a logical basic amenity: hay does not serve the same daily role for these animals as it does for guinea pigs and rabbits.

How do you use House Ila in the accommodation?

  • Place the house low and stable on the ground cover.
  • Place the house in a spot where you can easily reach the hay rack.
  • Fill the hay rack with good, low-dust hay suitable for guinea pigs or rabbits.
  • Check daily if clean hay is still available.
  • Use multiple hiding places when multiple animals live together.

Preferably, do not place the house directly under a water bottle or in a place where the wood gets wet quickly. Wood remains at its best and most hygienic when it can stay dry.

The hay rack on the side

The integrated hay rack makes this house extra practical. Hay has a designated spot and is less likely to be scattered throughout the enclosure. The bar spacing of approx. 2.5 cm is designed so that guinea pigs and small rabbits can pull hay out of the rack.

  • Do not fill the hay rack too tightly, so that the hay remains easily accessible.
  • Use long-stemmed hay that stays well between the bars.
  • Check if your animals can comfortably access the hay.
  • Remove old, wet, or soiled hay daily.

Ensure proper use of every hay rack. Animals must be able to take hay without their heads getting stuck. Therefore, always check if the rack suits the size and behavior of your animals.

Guinea pigs and rabbits live socially

Guinea pigs and rabbits are social animals. Therefore, one house is usually not enough when multiple animals live together. Provide sufficient hiding places, multiple passageways, and enough space so that the animals can avoid each other when necessary.

House Ila has two openings, which is pleasant for the flow of people. However, it remains important to offer other resting places within the enclosure as well. This makes the layout calmer and prevents one cottage from becoming the only attractive spot.

Combining in the interior design

This house fits well in a practical guinea pig or rabbit corner. Think of a quiet spot with bedding, hay, a water bowl or drinking bottle nearby, and enough room to move around it.

Resin-free wood and bark wood for rodents and rabbits

About bark wood and a natural look

Wooden products with bark have a natural and rustic appearance. As a result, each house may look slightly different. Occasionally, a small piece of bark may come loose. This is part of the natural material and usually does not affect the function of the house.

The wood used is dried for a long period. However, check the wooden houses regularly. When sharp edges, loose parts, or severe gnawing damage appear, it is time to repair or replace the house.

Animal welfare label for Trixie Natural Living products

The Animal Welfare Label

The Tierschutz-Kennzeichen is an Austrian animal welfare label for products that have been assessed based on animal welfare regulations, practical experience, and current insights. For you as a pet owner, this is particularly reassuring because it shows that safe and animal-friendly use was considered during the design process.

Even with a quality mark, proper use remains important. Place the playhouse securely, inspect the wood regularly, and replace the product if it becomes damaged.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Regularly remove old hay, feed remnants, and loose bedding.
  • Check the hay rack for jammed or soiled hay.
  • Clean the wood locally only when necessary.
  • Let the house dry thoroughly before putting it back.
  • Regularly check openings, edges, bars, and the top for wear.
  • Replace the house when it is damaged or no longer remains sturdy.

Wood looks its best when used dry. Therefore, do not place the house in a spot where it constantly gets wet from a drinking bowl, water bottle, or toilet area. If the house is used as a toilet area anyway, it is often wiser to position the toilet bowl or other fixtures slightly differently.

Erg mooi huis, de cavia's zijn er dol op. Het hooiruif wordt niet gebruikt, de cavia's hebben te veel moeite het hooi er tussen de horizontale latjes uit te halen, verticale latjes werken voor mijn cavia's beter
