Product description

Trixie Long Ceramic Food/Water Bowl 22 cm

The Trixie Long Ceramic Food/Water Bowl 22 cm is a spacious, shallow ceramic bowl for animals that enjoy eating or drinking together. Thanks to its elongated shape, multiple animals can access the bowl at the same time without having to immediately crowd around a single small feeding spot. This makes the bowl particularly convenient for social animals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, chinchillas, and degus.

DRD selects these types of feed bowls primarily based on ease of use and product fit: is the bowl stable, easy to clean, and logical for multiple animals at the same time? This long ceramic bowl has a capacity of approx. 600 ml and can be used as a food bowl or water bowl. Thanks to the glazed ceramic, the bowl is smooth, hygienic, and easy to clean.

Why choose a long feed trough?

For social animals, eating together is often an important part of the daily routine. A small, round food bowl can sometimes be inconvenient when multiple animals want to eat at the same time. The elongated shape of this bowl divides the space better, making it easier for animals to stand next to each other.

For guinea pigs and rabbits, this is convenient for pellets, herbs, dried vegetables, or a shared portion of greens. For rats, chinchillas, and degus, the long shape can be handy when you have a group and want to present the food in an organized manner.

The tray is low enough to be easily accessible, yet sturdy thanks to the ceramic. This makes it practical in a cage, run, C&C enclosure, rabbit room, or spacious interior.

For which animals is the long feed trough suitable?

  • Rat: suitable as a spacious food bowl for a group of rats. The long shape allows multiple animals access to the food at the same time.
  • Guinea pig: very suitable as a food bowl for guinea pigs, especially when multiple guinea pigs eat together. Also handy for vegetables, herbs, or pellets.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a food or water bowl for rabbits. When using as a water bowl, ensure stable and clean placement.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a food bowl for chinchillas. Use appropriate portions and ensure the bowl remains clean and dry.
  • Degu: suitable as a food bowl for degus, especially with multiple animals. Thanks to the ceramic, the bowl stands firmly and is easy to clean.

For small rodents such as mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and gerbils, this bowl is usually too large as a standard food bowl. For those animals, you would prefer to choose a smaller ceramic bowl that better suits their size, portions, and decor.

Use as a food bowl

As a food bowl, this model is particularly handy when multiple animals are eating at the same time. The long shape prevents all the food from accumulating in one small spot. This allows animals to eat better side by side, and also makes it easier for you as the owner to keep track of what is being eaten.

  • Use the bowl for pellets, kibble, herbs, vegetables, or suitable snacks.
  • Place the container on a flat, stable surface.
  • Remove leftover vegetables or wet food in a timely manner.
  • Clean the bowl regularly, especially with moist food.
  • When dealing with multiple animals, ensure sufficient feeding stations in case feed surveillance occurs.

For group animals, one long food bowl is often more practical than one small bowl. However, it remains important to observe your animals' behavior. If there is pushing or guarding while eating, an extra feeding spot may still be a sensible option.

Use as a water bowl

This bowl can also be used as a water bowl. With a capacity of approx. 600 ml, it is spacious enough for multiple animals. Thanks to the glazed ceramic, the bowl is easy to clean and the material does not absorb moisture.

  • Change the water daily, and more often when it becomes dirty.
  • Place the water bowl on a stable, flat surface.
  • Do not place the container in the middle of loose bedding.
  • Check if animals can easily access it without stepping inside.
  • For animals that dig or throw a lot, consider using a raised, stable drinking spot.

If you use this bowl outdoors or in a cool room, check the water very carefully. In the summer, water can become warm or dirty more quickly. In the winter, water can cool down or freeze more quickly, especially for outdoor rabbits.

Use in guinea pigs and rabbits

The long shape is very convenient for guinea pigs and rabbits, as these animals often eat together. You can use the bowl for the daily portion of pellets, but also for fresh vegetables, herbs, or a small amount of dried vegetables as a supplement.

For guinea pigs, it is helpful if multiple animals can access the litter box at the same time. For rabbits, the litter box works well in a spacious run, rabbit room, or feeding corner. Preferably, do not place the box directly in the toilet area so that food and water remain cleaner.

For use in rats, chinchillas, and degus

For rats, this long tray is handy when you have a group and want to offer the food more spread out. Place the tray on a stable surface and check regularly to ensure that no bedding or leftovers remain inside.

For chinchillas and degus, the tray can be used for pellets, herbs, or other suitable food. Because these animals may actively gnaw and dig, it is advisable to place the tray on a stable surface and clean it regularly.

What is ceramics?

Ceramic is fired earthenware. This food bowl is glazed, making the surface smoother and less porous. This makes ceramic very suitable for food and water bowls, because it is easy to clean and food residue does not soak into the material as easily.

Ceramic is sturdy and relatively heavy, but not unbreakable. Therefore, check the bowl regularly for cracks, sharp edges, or damage. Minor imperfections in ceramic can occur and are inherent to the material, as long as the bowl is otherwise smooth, intact, and safe to use.

Summer tip for use as a water bowl

Do you use the container as a water bowl for guinea pigs or rabbits in the summer? If so, always place the container in the shade and check the water more frequently for heat and contamination. At high temperatures, it can be pleasant to use a cooling aid near the drinking area, as long as your animal can always choose where to sit or lie down.

An ICEPOD can help keep the area around the watering station cooler. However, always check that the water remains clean and change it more often than usual on hot days.

Winter tip for use as a water bowl

In winter, water can cool down or freeze more quickly, especially for outdoor rabbits. Therefore, place the water bowl in a sheltered spot and check several times a day to see if the water is still drinkable. Change the water in a timely manner so that your animals always have access to clean water.

In cold weather, a heat pod under or near the drinking spot can help reduce the risk of frostbite. Still, check regularly, as no aid replaces daily checks.

Cleaning and maintenance

Glazed ceramic is easy to clean. Rinse the bowl regularly and remove food residue, water stains, or vegetable residue in a timely manner. Allow the bowl to dry thoroughly when cleaning it in between uses and check immediately if the ceramic is still intact.

  • Clean the bowl daily when used as a water bowl.
  • Remove wet or old food residues immediately.
  • Check regularly for cracks or sharp edges.
  • Do not use the container anymore if the ceramic is broken or sharp.
  • Place the container stably so that animals cannot easily bump into it or step into it.
