Rats are not herbivores

Rats belong to the granivores, just like mice, hamsters and gerbils. Yet the diet of all these animals differs significantly from each other. What all these animals, along with herbivores such as guinea pigs and rabbits, have in common is the herbs they occasionally eat for medicinal purposes. In the wild, animals have to fend for themselves, they have developed an excellent botany.

Use of herbs for rats

Herbs have their own application purpose. One herb has a calming effect, another has a digestive effect and yet another has an expectorant effect. For rats, in particular, one type of herb that stands out above the rest is thyme. Thyme has traditionally been used for the respiratory tract. It has an expectorant effect and allows free breathing.

Which herbs your rats like depends strongly on individual needs. If you really want to find out which ones they like, it is recommended to try several different herbs. Give the animals a little bit of each herb each time and see how they respond.

If the animals show certain ailments, you can adjust the herb to the ailment.
