A good hamster home isn't an "accessory" but a basic necessity. Hamsters and dwarf hamsters are natural cave dwellers: during the day, they prefer a sheltered, deep, dark sleep. A suitable hamster home provides peace and quiet, safety, and helps your hamster exhibit natural behavior (building a nest, storing supplies, and sheltering).
At DRD Rodent Shop® , you'll find hamster houses for every habitat and style: from multi-room houses to wooden, ceramic, and plastic ones. We've been specialists since 2011 and select them based primarily on well-being, safety, size, and practical hygiene.
Selection guide: which hamster house suits your hamster?
Looking for " hamster house ," " hamster home, " or " hamster houses "? Then start with two simple checks:
- Species & size: dwarf hamster or Syrian hamster ? There's a huge difference in size, so always check the dimensions and the entrances.
- Purpose: Do you want a main house (sleeping), a storage/shelter (extra), or a functional house like a sand house?
What size should a hamster house be?
A house should be large enough for comfortable sleeping , nesting , and (if your hamster wants one) storage for a small supply. Pay attention not only to the length and width, but also to the height and, especially, the opening(s) .
- Dwarf hamster cage: Practically from about 12 x 12 cm (preferably larger). The entrance is often around 5 cm .
- Bedding + House: Place houses cleverly in a deep area so your hamster can "build" them in.
- Syrian hamster cage: preferably around 20 × 15 cm (larger is better). Entrance often ± 6–7 cm .
Tip: Draw the dimensions on paper (e.g., 20 x 20 x 15 cm). This way, you can immediately see if the house is logical for your hamster.
Is a hamster house with an open bottom better?
In most accommodations, an open floor is the most practical choice. Why?
- ✓ More hygienic: moisture seeps into the substrate (instead of remaining in a base plate).
- ✓ Better to combine with a deep digging layer (your hamster “builds” the house).
- ✓ Easier to keep clean with spot cleaning.
If you do choose a house with a floor, it's extra important to check it regularly and keep it clean.
Multi-room house: why hamsters often love this
A multi-room house is a house with two to four separate rooms (like a mini-apartment). This fits perfectly with the natural "room system" of hamsters. Many hamsters naturally use different zones: sleeping, storing supplies, and sometimes even a designated toilet area.
- ✓ More privacy and peace
- ✓ Easy to check without unnecessarily disturbing the nest
- ✓ Perfect for hamster scaping and deep substrates

Hamster house: wood, ceramic, or plastic: which is best?
The "best" material depends primarily on your setup and intended use. For your hamster, it's all about safety, size, and hiding space.
There are also houses made of grass/hay, coconut, cork and safe synthetic resin - fun to combine in a natural habitat.
How many hamster houses does a hamster need?
One house is the minimum, but multiple hiding places usually work better. Consider:
- ✓ Main house for sleeping (nesting place)
- ✓ Additional shelter in or near the digging zone
- ✓ Tunnel/smaller house as a "stopover" or supply point
In hamster scaping this works especially well: you create routes and resting points, so that your hamster rarely has to feel "open".
What is a sand house (bath house)?
A sand house is a house used as a sand bath . Hamsters like to roll and dig in sand to groom their fur. Combine this with suitable sand from the Hamster Sand & Sand Bath category.
How do you clean a hamster house?
Cleaning is primarily smart and local. Check houses regularly, but leave the nesting area intact as much as possible (unless it's really dirty).
- Wooden houses: do not immerse in water (wood/glue can “work”).
- Practical tip: Enzyme cleaners help to remove odors/urine from (among others) wood: urine spray (enzyme based) .
- Ceramics/plastic: usually wipe with a damp cloth and let it dry thoroughly.

Checklist: Choosing the right hamster house in 60 seconds
- ✓ Does your hamster have enough space in it (to turn, nest, empty its cheek pouches)?
- ✓ Does the house preferably have an open floor for hygiene and "building in"?
- ✓ Does the house have at least 2 openings (especially for larger houses/complex shapes)?
- ✓ Are the entrances correct for your species (dwarf hamster vs. golden hamster)?
- ✓ Are you combining 1 main house + 1–2 extra shelters?
Safety warnings
- ✓ Avoid houses with openings that are too small or sharp (especially for golden hamsters).
- ✓ For larger houses, a second exit is extra convenient (feels safer and prevents a “clamped feeling”).
- ✓ Place heavy parts (ceramics/stone) preferably stably, not loosely on a deep excavation layer.
- ✓ Combine houses with sufficient nesting material and deep ground cover .
FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Hamster Houses
What is the best hamster house?
The best home is tailored to your hamster: spacious enough, secure, suitable entrances, and preferably an open floor. For many hamsters, a multi-room home is a top choice.
Is an open-bottom hamster house better?
Often yes: more hygienic, easier to spot clean and your hamster can nicely "build" the house into the substrate.
What size house for a dwarf hamster?
Aim for a minimum of approximately 12 x 12 cm (preferably larger) with an entrance around 5 cm, depending on the build of the animal and the shape of the house.
What size house for a golden hamster (Syrian hamster)?
It's best to choose a size of approximately 20 x 15 cm (wider is better) with an entrance of approximately 6–7 cm. Pay particular attention to sufficient height and a comfortable turning radius.
Is a ceramic hamster house good?
Yes, especially as an extra hiding place or cool spot. Ceramic is bite-resistant and easy to clean.
How do I clean a wooden hamster house?
Do not soak in water. Work locally and use an enzyme cleaner, for example, urine spray .
