Good home for the Hamster or Dwarf Hamster
A good hamster house is big enough for the hamster. The animal must be able to sleep comfortably in its house and preferably be able to make a nest. Even if hamsters get their own house, they continue to make nests. This is instinctive behavior that is very important for the animals.
Hamster house for the Dwarf hamster or Golden hamster
For a Dwarf Hamster house , a house from 9 cm is already suitable. For a Syrian Hamster house (Golden Hamster) a house from 20 cm is a lot more pleasant. Because there is a lot of difference in size between the hamsters, it is important to look at the dimensions of the house, but also at the dimensions of the openings of the house.
Is an open-bottom hamster house better?
Houses with an open bottom are preferable. They ventilate better and get less dirty. If the hamster decides to do its business in the house, there is at least no bottom that can get dirty.
Should a hamster house be big or small?
It is good to give the Hamster either one big house or several small houses. With a big house the hamster can also store his supplies in it. If the house is too small, he will store his supplies somewhere else.
Why does a hamster need a home?
Hamsters are nocturnal and burrowers. In the wild, they sleep deep underground in tunnels they dig themselves. A hamster house offers:
- Security
- Safety and peace
- A place to sleep, hoard and retreat
Without a house your hamster feels unsafe, which can lead to stress, fear reactions and less active behavior. In short: a house is a must!
What is the function of a hamster house?
The houses can have different functions. For example, there are houses that are also suitable as a sandbox or houses that consist of multiple floors, rooms or a tunnel system.
What is the best hamster house?
The best house:
- Has an open bottom (for hygiene and digging behavior)
- Made of safe materials such as wood, grass, synthetic resin or coconut
- Has at least two openings , so your hamster never feels trapped
- Is large enough , adapted to the size of the animal dwarf hamster/hamster
Choose a house that suits the size of your hamster and the furnishings of the enclosure.
What size should a hamster house be?
For a dwarf hamster :
- Minimum 12x12 cm, preferably larger
- Entrance of ± 5 cm diameter
For a Syrian hamster (golden hamster) :
- Minimum 20x15 cm
- Entrance ± 6–7 cm in diameter
Bigger is always better! Your hamster wants to be able to turn around, empty its cheek pouches and sleep curled up.
How many houses does a hamster need?
One house is the minimum, but several shelters are better!
Think about:
- A main house to sleep in
- A smaller house or tunnel for hoarding
- An extra hiding place in the digging zone
By offering multiple options, you give your hamster freedom and control over its living environment.
Should the hamster house have a bottom?
No! A good hamster house has no bottom . Why?
- More hygienic – urine seeps into the bedding
- Better for the nails – natural movement
- Easier to clean
- Your hamster can 'remodel' the house itself with bedding
Houses with floors can become warm, damp and susceptible to mold.
What is a bathhouse?
A sand house is a special house filled with chinchilla sand or bath sand where your hamster:

Sand houses are ideal for dwarf hamsters that live in dry desert-like areas.
Is a ceramic hamster house good?
Yes, definitely! Especially in the summer. Ceramics:

What is a multi-room house and why is it so nice for hamsters?
A multi-room house (also called a multi-room home) is a house with several separate rooms , just like a small apartment for your hamster. It often consists of 2 to 4 rooms, connected by passages.
Why hamsters love this:
- It looks like a real corridor and room system , like they build in the wild
- Your hamster can 'decorate' rooms : one for sleeping, one for hoarding, one for toilet use
- It gives more privacy and less stress
- You can easily lift it up to check if everything is clean and safe
Should you be able to look into the hamster's house?
It can sometimes help to draw the dimensions that we have with the houses. That way you get a better feel for the size of the house. Take a ruler and draw on a piece of paper 20 by 20 by 15 cm, then you know exactly how much space your hamster will have.

You can read in the article specifications for which animal a certain article is suitable. For example, the houses say "Hamster" or just "Dwarf hamster". By 'hamster' we mean all hamster species and by 'dwarf hamster' only the dwarf hamster species.
What material is best for the hamster house?
In itself, it does not matter to the hamster which material hamster house you choose. For yourself, it can be a matter of taste or the theme of the hamster enclosure. For example, a wooden house for a jungle theme or a plastic house for a Christmas theme. Fortunately, the choice is huge!
How to clean a hamster house?
Cleaning wooden houses used to be very difficult. We advise against immersing wooden houses in water, because the glue layer can come loose. A very handy cleaning agent is CSI Urine Spray or Ecopets Urine Buster . Both agents work on an enzyme basis.
