How can I give water to a hamster?

The most well-known way of giving water is the drinking bottle. This is easy to attach to the enclosure and gives the hamsters access to their drink all day long. A drinking bottle is also very hygienic, because no dirt can get in. It is very important that the drinking bottle is cleaned regularly, otherwise algae and bacteria can grow in it. These micro-organisms are harmful to the health of hamsters.

Hygienic
Always access to water
Controllable water intake

Another great advantage of a drinking bottle is that you can monitor the water intake. So you can see how much your hamsters drink and that is important to keep an eye on their health. Animals that are sick and no longer drink are extra vulnerable and can quickly be in danger of dying due to dehydration.

Why is a drinking bottle important for my hamster?

A drinking bottle prevents water from being contaminated by the substrate. Bottles are more hygienic and easier to keep clean than a water bowl. In addition, the drinking bottle helps your hamster drink water in a natural way.

Can a food bowl be used as a water bowl for the Hamster?

It is also possible to give the hamster water from a drinking bowl. It is very important that the drinking bowl is cleaned several times a day and is placed on a stable surface. Placing a water bowl on the ground cover is unfortunately not an option because the hamster will then undermine it.

What is the difference between a water bowl and a drinking bottle for hamsters?

  • Water bowls are simple and give your hamster the freedom to drink from a bowl, but they can become soiled more quickly with bedding or food scraps.
  • Drinking bottles are more hygienic, keep the water clean and provide control over the amount of water your hamster drinks.

How do I choose the right drinking bottle for my hamster?

Choose a drinking bottle with:

  • A stainless steel spout that does not break easily.
  • An easy to attach system to the cage.
  • A sufficient content (depending on the hamster species (Golden hamsters drink more than Dwarf hamsters), but also the number of hamsters in the enclosure (Litters, Couples, groups)
*Pairings: Only possible with Russian Dwarf Hamsters, Campbell's Dwarf Hamsters and Roborovski Dwarf Hamsters.
*Groups: Only possible with Campbell's Dwarf Hamsters

Can I use multiple water bottles for my hamster?

Yes, it is a good idea to place two water bottles in different parts of the cage. This gives your hamster more choice and prevents him from running out of water.

How do I clean the drinking bottle?

Clean the bottle at least twice a week. Use warm water and a mild, animal-friendly soap. Make sure to clean the spout and mechanism well to prevent mold or bacteria.

What should I do if my hamster doesn't use the water bottle?

Check that the spout works properly and that your hamster can drink from it easily. Sometimes it can help to put a few drops of water on the spout so that your hamster becomes curious. Otherwise you can temporarily switch to a water bowl.

What is the best material for a hamster drinking bottle?

Most hamster water bottles are made of either plastic or glass . Glass is more durable and easier to clean, while plastic is lighter. Both materials are safe as long as they are properly maintained.

How much water does my hamster need?

A hamster drinks an average of 10-15 ml of water per 100 grams of body weight per day. Make sure you always provide fresh water and check daily that the water bottle is not empty.

Can I use a water bowl for my hamster?

Yes, if your hamster won't accept a water bottle, you can use a water bowl. Make sure it is sturdy and that you clean it daily to prevent contamination. Please note that water bowls can get dirty faster.

Is a water bowl dangerous for young animals?

Yes, a food bowl that is used as a water bowl can be dangerous for young animals. This is the case if a litter has been born and the young are already starting to walk around a bit, then there is a chance that they will end up in the water bowl with all the consequences that entails. If there is a litter, we recommend placing the water bowl on a plateau that the young cannot reach and only offering it when the young are big enough to drink from a water bowl independently.

As can be seen in the image above, the drinking bottle for hamsters can be hung in two ways. One way forces the hamster to stand on its hind legs, and the other way gives the animal the opportunity to drink on all four legs. Which is better? Can you also hang the drinking bottle somewhere in between? We answer all your drinking bottle questions!

How do Dwarf Hamsters and Hamsters drink in the wild?

Hamsters get a large part of their moisture from their food . Seeds, parts of plants and insects already contain some moisture. This is also possible at home. After all, food always contains a little moisture, completely dry does not exist, otherwise it would be dust. If, for example, you also give your hamster green food, it will get a larger part of the required moisture from the green food. You may then notice that your hamster drinks less. This is because it gets enough nutrition from its green food. Live insects such as mealworms also contain a lot of moisture. However, it is still important to always offer a water source in the form of a drinking bottle or a water bowl.

Another way that Dwarf hamsters and Hamsters drink is by licking the dew drops off plants or catching them with their paws. For this, the hamsters have to stand upright and they do it well! A hamster, unlike a Guinea pig, is made to be able to stand upright. Its entire build is adapted to this and so standing upright is a natural position for a hamster. Drinking from a drinking bottle therefore actually imitates the natural way of drinking of the animals.

Drinking from a water bowl seems like a natural position, but in the wild hamsters rarely come across puddles of water from which to drink. In the desert it is very dry and moisture must be found in other ways.

Can a hamster get a hernia from drinking from a water bottle?

No, absolutely not. There is not a single case documented and in practice this is not possible. In our blog " Neck hernia due to drinking bottle in rodents & rabbits " we explain further why this is not possible.

hamster drinking bottle

How high should the hamster's drinking bottle hang?

As we mentioned earlier, the drinking bottle can be hung in two ways , namely a little higher so that the hamster has to stand or a little lower so that he can drink on all fours. Both ways are good, but everything in between can be annoying for the hamster because he can't quite stand on his hind legs and also not quite on all fours, so it's not quite right.

We know this can be a challenge with the ground cover, so it can be useful to hang the drinking bottle in a place with a stable surface. So a place where the hamster can stand stable, for example a plateau or in a sandy part of the enclosure.
