Gerbil platforms & ladders – clever height differences for an active, organised environment
Gerbils are avid diggers. A platform provides a fixed, stable spot for a sand bath , feeding area, or water bowl, for example, so that everything is less likely to disappear under the bedding. Bridges and ladders also allow you to create additional routes and viewpoints: fun, challenging, and practical all in one.
At DRD Rodent Shop® , you'll find a select range of corner platforms , walking platforms/running tracks , and willow bridges (including Trixie), as well as rodent-resistant options like aluminum . Specialists since 2011 .
Place your sand bath or feeding area on a plateau so that diggers are less likely to dig it up.
Bridges and racetracks direct walking routes and make the stay more manageable.
Primarily wood and rodent-resistant solutions; practical for terrariums and cages.
Selection guide – what's right for your gerbils?
- Corner shelf for smart use of space: Getzoo wooden corner shelf .
- Walking platform above the digging section: Wooden Walking Platform XL .
- Entrance (useful for busy groups): platform with stairs .
- Flexible connection : willow bridge 28 cm or willow bridge 55 cm .
✔ Start simple: one stable platform + one connecting route often works better than “all at once”.
What do you use platforms and ladders for?
You use them to create zones: digging below, walking and grooming above. A walking platform gives your gerbils space to run and keeps accessories stable, while the space below remains diggable.
Materials: wood or rodent-proof?
Untreated wood is natural and can be gnawed. If you want something that stays smooth longer (and is easy to clean), choose gnaw-resistant options like aluminum. Plastic is often less ideal for avid gnawers.
Places in the residence
- Secure platforms (legs or lattice screws) and prevent wobbling.
- Leave enough digging depth; gerbils like to be able to build tunnels.
- Use bridges as “stepping stones” instead of high jumps.
Practical tip: place the sand bath on a platform or in a fixed corner, and don't place drinking water directly next to the sand (this prevents wet sand and clumping). Use "routes" along the edges; gerbils often feel safer this way than an open center.
Maintenance & hygiene
Wipe down platforms regularly and remove any wet bedding immediately. You can spot-clean wooden platforms with a slightly damp cloth and let them dry thoroughly. Aluminum platforms are extra easy to clean and generally stay clean longer with avid rodents.
Checklist
✔ Platform large enough for a sand bath/feeding area
✔ No sharp edges or splinters
✔ Firm attachment, no gaps
✔ Routes safe (bridge/ladder), not too steep
✔ Regularly check for gnawing damage
FAQ – gerbil platforms & ladders
Do gerbils need a tray?
A tray is one of the most practical additions: it keeps the sand/food stable and gives structure to the enclosure.
How many trays is ideal?
Start with one base platform and then add a maximum of one or two routes. This way, the excavation section remains the leading element.
How do I combine this with other furnishings?
Combine with tunnels , houses and a sand bath for a logical, enriching whole.
