gerbil tunnels and tubes Gerbils are ground animals and love tunnels . In the wild, animals also live in tunnels underground, which we also call castles . In many cases the gerbils dig the tunnels themselves, but sometimes they also take a hole from another animal that has already left the hole. Being able to exhibit natural behavior is very important for all animals, which is why we know how important it is for gerbils to be able to walk through tunnels.

Why do Gerbils like tunnels?

Gerbils are prey animals that do not like their enclosure to be too open. They like to walk around sheltered in the enclosure, so that they do not have to worry about being caught from above by a predator . The feeling of security gives the animals peace and will also ensure that they become tame more quickly and get used to their environment.

Gerbils like tunnels with multiple entrances and exits, turns and different levels. That is also why they seem to dig everywhere in the enclosure and everything is messed up in no time! A spacious enclosure and a thick layer of bedding stimulates their curiosity and gives them the opportunity to explore their territory. You can give the Gerbils a thick layer of diggable ground cover or connect several tunnels and suitable pipes together to create an extensive tunnel system. The Rodipet Outdoors or our gnaw-resistant Bamboo tubes are very suitable for this.

What types of Gerbil tunnels are there?

We distinguish between two types of tunnels . One tunnel is intended for free walking. An example of this is a spacious tree bark tunnel . The other tunnel is intended as a challenge, like the tree trunk tunnel . The tree trunk tunnel is often too small to pass through, but the animals still enjoy making the holes in the tree trunk tunnel larger so that they can get through at some point. They then create their own tunnel, as it were. It is important to be careful that the tunnel is not too narrow and that the animals cannot get stuck in it.

What are Gerbil tunnels made of?

There are tunnels made of different materials. They are available in wood , plastic , cork , bamboo or grass . Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. We will tell you more about this in the article description. The most gnawing-resistant tunnel is made of bamboo , the so-called bamboo tunnels . Bamboo is extremely hard and from experience we can say that Gerbils do not really like to gnaw on it, so the bamboo tunnels are left alone and last longer!

Wooden tunnels like to be gnawed by animals and that is of course the intention! This causes the teeth to wear out and gives the animals a fun activity . Gerbils are high-energy animals that spend a lot of time in the wild. They also need something to do in our home and gnawing on a tunnel to make an extra opening in it, for example, will use up your excess energy.

Terracotta tunnels are ideal for Gerbils . In winter they are nice and warm and in summer they provide cooling. In addition, the tunnels ensure perfect nail wear when the Gerbils walk through them.

We do not recommend plastic tunnels for Gerbils. They are there, but they will not be found with us for Gerbils. Plastic is a material that can easily be chewed and any splinters from the pipes can cause injuries.

Plush, cotton and other soft materials are not suitable for Gerbils . This real rodent makes mincemeat of it and after a day or two a tunnel made of plush will be unrecognizable. The substance can be dangerous for Gerbils. If they ingest this, it can cause blockages in the intestines. For this reason we do not recommend hammocks and other fabric materials for Gerbils.

What should you pay attention to with Gerbil tunnels?

It is important that the openings are not too tight. Some holes are smaller and the intention is for the animals to gnaw these holes further open as a form of challenge. However, the animals should not get stuck in the holes. It is therefore important that the tunnels are regularly checked.
