Product description

Terracotta Rodent Tunnel Round 25 cm

The Terracotta Round Rodent Tunnel is a sturdy tunnel for rodents that enjoy hiding, walking through, climbing, exploring, and sitting in shelter. Thanks to its round shape and natural terracotta appearance, this tunnel fits beautifully into a natural interior, hamsterscaping, gerbilscaping, or ratscaping setup. The tunnel immediately adds structure to the enclosure and can be used as a passageway, hiding place, cooling spot, or connection between two zones.

Terracotta is unglazed earthenware. As a result, the material feels natural and somewhat rough. This is practical, as animals have grip on it while walking and their nails can wear down slightly in a natural way. Furthermore, on warm days, terracotta feels pleasantly cool, making the tunnel a nice extra place to choose from in the enclosure.

Why choose a terracotta tunnel?

A tunnel aligns well with the natural behavior of many rodents. In a well-designed enclosure, animals want not only open space but also sheltered routes, passageways, and places where they can retreat for a moment. This terracotta tunnel helps to make the enclosure more organized and natural.

When it comes to tunnels, DRD considers not only the material but, above all, the actual passage size. A tunnel must match the animal's body size so that your pet can move through it comfortably. This tunnel is therefore particularly suitable for mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, gerbils, dwarf rats, rats, and degus. The passage is too small for guinea pigs, rabbits, and chinchillas.

Terracotta as a cooling material

Terracotta feels naturally cool to the touch. This makes this tunnel a pleasant extra cooling retreat in the summer. Many rodents seek out sheltered, cooler spots when it gets hot. A terracotta tunnel can beautifully mimic that feeling of a cool, sheltered passage.

Use the tunnel as additional support and not as the sole solution during heat. On hot days, also ensure shade, good ventilation, sufficient drinking water, and an enclosure that is not in direct sunlight.

Natural nail wear

Because terracotta is unglazed and somewhat rougher, the paws get a grip on the material. When animals regularly walk through the tunnel, this can help with natural nail wear. Especially when you place the tunnel at a slight angle or as a short transition, animals put a little more pressure on their paws.

This does not replace a nail check. Check your pet's nails regularly and trim them when necessary. The tunnel is especially helpful as part of a smartly designed environment with different surfaces.

Great for natural decor and rodentscaping

This terracotta tunnel fits beautifully into a natural setting. You can combine it with deep substrate, cork bark, vines, branches, dried moss, leaves, and other natural materials. Thanks to the warm earth color, the tunnel blends in nicely with a forest, desert, or terrarium-style decor.

A nice idea is to place the tunnel partially under the bedding, with one open side visible at the front. This way, it looks like a real passage in the floor, while still allowing you to watch how your animal uses the tunnel. For burrowing animals, it is best to place the tunnel stably on the floor of the enclosure and build up the bedding around it.

For which animals is the Terracotta Tunnel suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a spacious passageway, hiding place, or natural design element. The tunnel is large for mice, making it work particularly well as part of a larger scape.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as a spacious tunnel, cooling spot, and hamsterscaping element. Place the tunnel stably and low, especially with deep bedding.
  • Hamster: suitable as a tunnel, hiding place, cool passage, and natural landscaping element. With a diameter of approx. 13 cm, the tunnel is also interesting for larger hamsters.
  • Gerbil: very suitable as a sturdy tunnel in gerbilscaping. Gerbils dig a lot, so always place the tunnel on the bottom of the enclosure and build up the bedding around it.
  • Dwarf rat: suitable as a tunnel or sheltered passage, depending on the size of the dwarf rat. Because dwarf rats can vary among themselves, actual body size remains the determining factor.
  • Rat: suitable as a tunnel or sheltered passage for rats that fit comfortably through a diameter of approx. Ø 13 cm. For larger rats, pay close attention to body build and intended use.
  • Guinea pig: not suitable; the tunnel is too small for guinea pigs.
  • Rabbit: not suitable; the tunnel is too small for rabbits.
  • Chinchilla: not suitable; the tunnel is too small for chinchillas.
  • Degu: suitable as a tunnel, passageway, and natural scaping element. Degus enjoy using sturdy structures to move over and through.

How do you install the tunnel safely?

Place the tunnel low and stable. For animals that dig frequently, such as hamsters and gerbils, it is best to place the tunnel directly on the bottom of the enclosure. Then you can distribute the bedding around it. This prevents the tunnel from sinking when your animal digs underneath it.

Do you want to place the tunnel at a slight angle for extra nail wear or as a natural transition? If so, do this subtly and ensure that the tunnel cannot roll, tilt, or slide away. A terracotta tunnel is sturdy and relatively heavy, so stable placement is important.

What is terracotta?

Terracotta literally means baked earth. It is unglazed, hard-fired earthenware. Because terracotta is not glazed, it has a rough, natural texture. This texture provides grip and makes the material suitable for products where animals walk over the surface.

Terracotta has a natural appearance and therefore fits well in enclosures with wood, cork, moss, humus, sand, hay, and other landscaping materials. The material is sturdy but can break if dropped or struck hard.

Cleaning and maintenance

Terracotta can be rinsed with water. Allow the tunnel to dry thoroughly before placing it back in the enclosure. Because terracotta is unglazed, moisture can penetrate the material slightly more than with glazed ceramics. Therefore, remove puddles or dirt promptly.

If urine gets on the tunnel, you can rinse it off and, if necessary, treat it with a suitable urine spray. Check the tunnel regularly for cracks, sharp edges, or damage. Do not use it anymore if sharp or loose pieces develop.

Material and dimensions

Material: terracotta ceramic, unglazed and rough.

Dimensions: approx. 22 × 11 × 14 cm.

Diameter: approx. Ø 13 cm.

Use: tunnel, hiding place, cooling spot, passageway, scaping element, and aid for natural nail wear.

Good to know

Always place the terracotta tunnel in a stable location and check regularly for wear or damage. Terracotta is sturdy, but not unbreakable. Do not drop the product and stop using it if sharp edges or cracks develop.

Use the tunnel as part of a varied enclosure setup. For example, combine it with suitable bedding, tunnels, houses, foraging material, and natural structures. This provides your animal with more routes, shelter, and freedom of choice within the enclosure.

Goede aankoop.
