What will you find here?

  • Cooling elements & cooling pods: rapid cooling (such as an ICEPOD/cooling pod) to provide temporary extra cooling comfort – always with the option of alternatives.
  • Cooling stones (ceramic): cool places to lie down that you can easily place in a shady corner of your enclosure.
  • Aluminum trays and houses: contact cooling via legs/belly and ideal for animals that like to gnaw (gnaw-resistant).
  • Ceramic and terracotta houses/tunnels: cool hiding places so your pet doesn't have to lie "too open."
  • Summer enrichment: herbs (variety) for browsing and foraging (as a supplement, not as a basic food).
  • Seasonal care: products and tips to support extra summer checkups and hygiene.

For which animals?

  • Hamsters, dwarf hamsters, mice: they especially benefit from a cool, sheltered resting place (ceramic/terracotta or cooling stone in the shade).
  • Gerbils: preferably choose gnaw-proof options such as aluminium (they are often avid rodents).
  • Rats: Cooling stones and (spacious) platforms are popular; offer several cooling spots so the group can choose.
  • Guinea pigs & rabbits: Larger cooling stones/cool zones and a cool hiding place often work best.
  • Chinchillas & degus: aluminum trays/houses are great: cooling through contact and durable.

Checklist: how to make it heat-proof

  • Shade & location: place the enclosure out of direct sunlight and avoid the "greenhouse effect" behind glass.
  • Always freedom of choice: offer at least two cool places (e.g. cooling stone + cooling hut/ceramic) so your animal can choose.
  • Setting up a cooling zone: preferably place the cooling element in a cool corner, not in the warmest spot.
  • Check drinking water extra often: change it more often in hot weather and check whether the water is being drunk properly.
  • Check animals: pay attention to behavior, appetite, and lethargy; if in doubt, consult a veterinarian.
  • Maintain hygiene: remove wet spots and dirty corners more quickly (comfort depends on freshness and dryness).

Practical tips

Cooling elements & cooling pods

  • Don't "cool everything": a cooling element should never be placed under the entire enclosure; your animal must be able to get away from the cooling system.
  • Cool, not ice cold: always check with your hand that the temperature is comfortable.
  • Provide shelter: many animals prefer to use cooling in/next to a shelter rather than in the middle of the enclosure.
  • Examples in this category: Scratch and Newton Icepod, Beeztees Cooling Element 21 cm, Trixie Heat & Cool Pod, Trixie Igloo with Cooling Stone.

Cooling stones (ceramic)

  • Out of the sun: a cooling stone in the sun can actually heat up – always place it in the shade.
  • Create a “cool corner”: place the cooling stone in a quiet area (possibly partly under a shelter/tunnel).
  • Useful for many species: from hamsters to rabbits – just make sure you choose the right size.
  • Examples: Trixie Cooling Stone Blue Ceramic, Cooling Stone Ceramic.

Rodent-resistant aluminum cooling

  • Perfect for real rodents: gerbils, chinchillas and degus love to gnaw – aluminium remains intact.
  • Contact cooling: animals experience cooling through their legs and bellies when they lie on the platform.
  • Multiple heights: a platform also offers a choice (rest above, shelter below) – nice in warm weather.
  • Examples: Aluminum Cooling Plate, Aluminum Tray, Aluminum Corner Tray 20 cm, Aluminum Chinchilla House 30 cm.

Cool hiding places (ceramic & terracotta)

  • Feel cool and safe: ideal for animals that don't like to lie "open" in the heat.
  • Preferably two entrances where possible: especially for guinea pigs/rabbits, a hiding place with the option to escape is extra nice.
  • Material choice: ceramic/terracotta often stays cooler than wood and is easy to keep clean.
  • Examples: Ceramic houses (e.g. apple/peanut/melon), Terracotta houses, Terracotta tunnel.

Summer enrichment

  • Herbs = a supplement: see them as a variation for browsing/foraging, not as a replacement for complete food.
  • Rest time: on hot days many animals opt for “lazy” enrichment: quietly sniffing and selecting.
  • Example: Summer Harvest Herb Package .

Seasonal care (summer)

  • Daily check: warm weather requires extra monitoring (behaviour, appetite, drinking, hygiene).
  • Dry & Clean: Remove dirty or damp corners faster – that helps comfort and health.
  • Always use according to the label: care products are supportive; follow instructions and keep observing.
  • Example: Anti-Myiasis (maggot disease) spray 75 ml.

Hygiene & maintenance

  • Cooling stones/ceramics: Wipe and clean regularly; let dry completely before replacing.
  • Cooling elements: Keep clean and dry; check for damage/leaks before use.
  • Hiding places: check daily for wet areas and dirt (especially in warm weather).
  • Drinking water: change more often in hot weather and check for flow/blockage.

Safety

  • Freedom of choice is mandatory: always offer cooling in such a way that your animal can walk away (never "fixed" cooling underneath everything).
  • Do not place in direct sunlight: cooling stones/cooling elements can heat up in direct sunlight.
  • Beware of rodents: for avid rodents, prefer ceramic/terracotta or aluminium instead of soft or fragile materials.
  • Take signals seriously: lethargy, panting, not wanting to eat/drink or abnormal behaviour = immediately cool the dog and contact the vet.

FAQ Summer Products & Cooling

What is better: heatsink or cooling element?
A cooling stone is ideal as a permanent, cool place to lie down (low-fuss, sturdy). A cooling pack/ICEPOD is handy as an extra boost on really hot days. Many customers combine both.

Which cooling is the most gnawing-resistant?
Aluminum trays/houses are the most durable for animals that like to chew (such as gerbils, chinchillas and degus).

Where is the best place to place a cooling stone?
In a shady, quiet corner of the enclosure. Keep it out of direct sunlight and always provide an alternative (not cool) resting spot.

My pet doesn't lie on the cooling stone, is that a problem?
No. Cooling works best as a choice . Some animals prefer a cool hiding place (ceramic/terracotta) or an aluminum tray.
