Product description

Trixie Ceramic Cooling Disc for rodents and rabbits

The Trixie Ceramic Cooling Disc is a practical cooling spot for warm days. The disc is made of rough, unglazed ceramic and naturally feels cooler than many soft materials in the enclosure. Your pet can lie on or next to it whenever it needs a cooler spot.

The cooling disc is available in three sizes, so you can choose the size that suits your pet's body size and the space in the enclosure. For extra cooling, you can place the disc in the refrigerator beforehand. Then, place the cooling disc on a stable, dry spot and ensure that your pet can always choose whether to lie on it or prefer to rest somewhere else.

Advantages of the Trixie Cooling Disc

Provides animals with a cool resting place during hot days
Made of raw ceramic without a glaze layer
Available in three sizes for different animals
Can be placed in the refrigerator for extra cooling
Rough texture can help with light nail wear
Anti-slip feet help place the disc more stably

Why choose a ceramic cooling disc?

On warm days, many rodents and rabbits naturally seek out cooler spots. In an enclosure, that choice is not always readily available. A ceramic cooling disc gives your animal an extra option to lie on a cooler surface, in addition to the usual resting places, hiding spots, and bedding.

Ceramic absorbs cold well and therefore feels pleasantly cool. The disc is inherently cooler than soft bedding, but you can also place it in the refrigerator beforehand. This creates an extra cool spot without forcing your pet to lie on it.

The rough, unglazed texture has another practical advantage: when animals walk over it, it can contribute to light natural nail wear. That does not replace nail checks, but it is a nice additional benefit of the material.

Which size do you choose?

The correct size depends on your animal's body size and how you intend to use the cooling disc. An animal does not always have to lie completely on the disc; some animals prefer to lie half on the disc or next to it, with only their belly, paws, or side against the cool edge.

  • 20 × 15 cm: suitable for small rodents such as mice, dwarf hamsters, hamsters, and small gerbils.
  • 28 × 20 cm: suitable for medium-sized animals such as gerbils, rats, chinchillas, degus, and smaller guinea pigs.
  • 35 × 25 cm: suitable for larger animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits, or for animals that like to have more room to lie down stretched out.

Undecided between two sizes? Then it is better to choose a slightly larger cooling disc. A larger cooling area gives your pet more choice to lie on it, next to it, or partially on it.

For which animals is the Trixie Cooling Disc suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable in the smallest size as a cool spot in the enclosure. Place the disc low and stable so that mice can easily get on and off it.
  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as an extra cooling spot during warm days. Place the disc on a stable surface and ensure that regular resting spots remain available as well.
  • Hamster: suitable as a cool tile or resting place. Choose the size based on your hamster's body size and the space in the enclosure.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a cool spot, preferably on a stable surface or platform. Gerbils dig actively, so prevent the disc from being undermined or tilted.
  • Rat: suitable as a cool resting place in the enclosure or in the run during warm days. Rats can choose for themselves whether to lie on it or rest next to it.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a cool resting place. For guinea pigs, usually choose a larger size so that they can lie on it comfortably with part of their body.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a cooling tile in the enclosure, run, or rabbit room. Choose a generous size and always place the disc in the shade.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a cool resting place, especially in warm weather. Use the disc dry and place it stably, next to regular hiding and resting places.
  • Degu: suitable as a cool spot in the enclosure. Place the disc stably and check regularly that it is not being undermined.

Usage & placement

Place the cooling disc on a stable, flat, and dry spot. Do not place it on top of a thick, loose layer of bedding where it could sink in or become tilted. For burrowing animals, it is better to place the disc on a flat platform, tile, or firmly compacted surface.

Use the cooling disc as an additional choice spot. It is important that your pet also has other places to rest, such as a house, tunnel, cool shady spot, or normal bedding. This way, your pet can decide for itself what feels comfortable.

For outdoor animals, the cooling disc must always be kept in the shade. Never place it in direct sunlight, as the ceramic can actually become hot. On warm days, check regularly whether the disc still feels pleasantly cool.

Cool further in the refrigerator

For extra cooling, you can place the cooling disc in the refrigerator beforehand. Take it out, dry off any condensation, and then place it in the enclosure. This prevents the bedding from getting wet or your animal from lying in a spot that is too damp.

Use the refrigerator, not the freezer, unless the manufacturer indicates otherwise. An extremely cold disc can be unpleasant, especially for small animals. The goal is a cool surface that your animal can use voluntarily, not an ice-cold spot where the body cools down too quickly.

Do you notice that the disc has warmed up? Then you can put it back in the refrigerator later or use a second cooling disc to alternate.

Rough ceramics and small nails

The cooling disc is made of rough, unglazed ceramic. Due to this texture, the surface may cause slight wear to the nails when animals regularly walk over it. This can be particularly useful for animals that like to walk on solid surfaces.

Continue to check the nails regularly. A cooling pad is not a substitute for nail care when nails become too long, but it can be a useful part of a natural, varied interior design.

The animal welfare label

This product bears the Tierschutz-Kennzeichen. This is an animal welfare label for products that have been assessed in accordance with the Austrian Animal Welfare Act. The assessment considers, among other things, legal regulations, current insights, practical experience, and the use of the product by the relevant animal species.

For you as a pet owner, this provides extra guidance when choosing a product intended for animal-friendly use. It remains important to select the correct size, place the disc stably, and carefully check whether your animal uses the cooling disc comfortably.

Cleaning and maintenance

Wipe the cooling disc regularly with lukewarm water and dry it thoroughly before replacing it. Because the surface is rough and unglazed, dirt, dust, or moisture can settle in small imperfections more easily than with glazed ceramic.

Check the disc for cracks, sharp edges, chipped pieces, or damaged anti-slip feet. Do not use the cooling disc if it is damaged. Ceramic may exhibit irregularities; this is inherent to the material, as long as the disc remains safe and smooth enough for use.

Great to combine with

The Trixie Cooling Disc fits well with a summer setup featuring multiple cool spots. You can combine it with:

Good to know

Offer the Trixie Cooling Disc only under supervision and check regularly for wear. Place the disc stably, in a dry place, and always out of direct sunlight. Use the refrigerator for extra cooling and dry off condensation before replacing the disc. Do not use the cooling disc if cracks, sharp edges, or damage occur.
