The Large Ceramic Apple House is a cheerful and practical little house for small rodents. Thanks to its apple shape, it fits beautifully into a natural or playful interior, while the glazed ceramic is sturdy, hygienic, and easy to clean. You can use this house as a hiding place, a cool spot, a sleeping place, a sandbox, or a sniffing spot with treats.

Mice, dwarf hamsters, smaller hamsters, and gerbils, in particular, can make good use of this ceramic house. Why choose the Keramiek Appelhuis?

Ceramic is a pleasant material for small rodents. It feels sturdy, is chew-resistant under normal use, and is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth. This makes this house handy when you are looking for a hiding place that absorbs odors or moisture less quickly than untreated wood.

The Apple House is also multifunctional. Some animals use it as a sleeping place, while others enjoy it as a sandpit, snack house, or cool spot. Thanks to the closed bottom, you can also place a layer of bath sand, bedding, herbs, or foraging material inside. This way, you immediately turn a single house into a small enrichment point in the enclosure.

Ceramics as a cool house in the summer

Ceramic feels naturally cool to the touch. This makes this little house a nice extra cool spot on warm days. Small rodents like to seek out sheltered, cooler spots when it gets hot. A ceramic house can help with this, especially when you place it stably and low in the enclosure.

Do not place ceramics in direct sunlight and do not use them as the sole means to combat heat. Good ventilation, shade, sufficient drinking water, and a quiet, cool spot remain important. The Apple House is primarily a pleasant additional option within the accommodation.

Can be used as a sandbox or snack house

Thanks to the closed bottom, this Apple House is also great as a small sand bath for hamsters, dwarf hamsters, and gerbils. The rim helps to keep sand or pellets better inside the house. This makes it convenient for animals that like to bathe, dig, or use a designated sand spot.

You can also fill the little house with a small amount of dried herbs, flowers, leaves, or foraging material. This creates a playful sniffing spot where your pet has something to discover on its own. Always use small quantities and check regularly to ensure the house remains clean and dry.

For which animals is the Appelhuis Ceramics Large suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a hiding place, snack spot, or decorative house in a natural mouse-friendly setup. Mice can easily walk in and out through the openings.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable as a ceramic house, cooling spot, sand bath, or hamsterscaping element. Due to its size, this house is particularly practical for dwarf hamsters.
  • Hamster: suitable for many hamsters as a sand bath, cooling spot, or sniffing house. For a large Syrian hamster, it may feel a bit cramped as a permanent sleeping house; therefore, always consider the body size and how your hamster uses the house.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a ceramic sand bath, sniffing area, or sturdy decoration in gerbilscaping. Place the house stably on the bottom of the enclosure so that it cannot sink due to digging.
  • Dwarf rat: too small as a house for most dwarf rats. Dwarf rats can vary in size, but for comfortable use, you usually choose a more spacious house or larger tunnel.
  • Rat: too small as a house for rats. Larger houses, tunnels, hammocks, and Ratscaping elements make more sense for rats.
  • Guinea pig: too small as a shelter or sleeping place for guinea pigs. For guinea pigs, preferably choose a spacious guinea pig house or tunnel.
  • Rabbit: too small for rabbits. Rabbits need larger hiding places, tunnels, and houses.
  • Chinchilla: too small as a house or sand bath for chinchillas. Chinchillas need a larger sand bath and more spacious furnishings.
  • Degu: too small as a full-fledged sandbox or house for degus. For degus, it is better to choose a larger, stable sandbox and more spacious hiding places.

How do you safely place the Apple House in the enclosure?

Place the ceramic house low and stable on the bottom of the enclosure. Preferably, do not place it on top of a thick, loose layer of bedding where it could tip over or sink. For burrowing animals such as gerbils and hamsters, it is advisable to place heavy ceramic products on a stable base and then build up the bedding around them.

Simply use the roof as it is naturally part of the layout. Some animals walk across it or use it as an intermediate step. However, ensure that no high points of failure are created around the house and that the house cannot shift.

Maintenance and cleaning

Glazed ceramic is easy to clean. Regularly remove sand, bedding, or snack residue from the house and wipe the ceramic with a damp cloth. For heavier soiling, you can clean the house with warm water and let it dry thoroughly before putting it back.

Always check ceramics for damage. Do not use a ceramic product if sharp edges, cracks, or chipped pieces appear.

Material and dimensions

  • Material: glazed ceramic.
  • Dimensions: approx. 15 cm high and Ø 15 cm.
  • Openings: approx. 5 cm high and 10 cm wide.
  • Bottom: closed bottom.

Thanks to the glazed ceramic, the house is sturdy, has a smooth finish, and is easy to keep clean. The closed bottom makes it extra convenient when you use the Apple House as a sandbox, snack area, or small bathhouse.

Good to know

Ceramic is sturdy, but can break if dropped. Therefore, always place the playhouse on a stable surface and check regularly that it remains intact and smooth. Use the product only under normal supervision and remove it if damage occurs.

Are you using the Apple House as a sand bath? Then choose suitable bath sand for hamsters, dwarf hamsters, or gerbils. For rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits, a sand bath is not suitable or necessary; for these animals, it is preferable to choose species-appropriate setup and care.
