Mouse toys & foraging – play and enrichment at DRD Rodent Shop®

Mouse toys & foraging – smart enrichment for active mice

Mice are curious, lightning-fast, and passionate climbers. They want to be busy every day: exploring, destroying, creating routes, hiding, and especially foraging (searching for food). In this category, you'll find a carefully selected range of mouse toys and foraging toys for mice: from hanging bridges and climbing ropes to snack puzzles and challenging play elements. Practical, safe, and tailored to natural behavior – so your mice stay occupied and you have a more enjoyable, active environment.

Feeding becomes a game

Make feeding an activity: scattering food, hiding, and solving puzzles. Combine this with mouse food and reward the little ones with mouse snacks .

Climbing & route building

Coloured mice love heights, crossings, and exciting paths. Build routes with platforms and ladders and add safe connections with tunnels .

Smart cage design

Toys work best in a well-furnished enclosure. Combine them with bedding , houses , and cage accessories .

Which mouse toy suits your mice?

Not every mouse plays the same way. Some prefer climbing and hanging routes, while others are completely focused on searching and puzzling. That's why you'll find several types of mouse toys in this category:

  • Climbing spectacle – suspension bridges, ropes, ladders and climbing objects for clever routes.
  • Foraging & Puzzle Toys – Games where your mouse has to search, push, or work for a reward.
  • Demolition & gnawing fun – safe material for demolishing, gnawing and building with.
  • Playhouses & Hideouts – a place to explore, hide, and rest in between.

Tip: It's better to change things up regularly (small changes) than everything at once. This keeps the stay interesting, without creating unrest in the group.

Foraging plan: how to make feeding more fun and natural

Foraging is ideal for combating boredom and fits perfectly with mouse behavior. With these basics, you'll quickly make a difference:

  • Provide (part of) the food via scattering food in the ground cover.
  • Hide small treats in toys, cardboard, or under hiding places.
  • Work with mini-portions spread throughout the enclosure (instead of everything in one bowl).
  • Don't make it too difficult: success keeps it fun, frustration doesn't.

Convenient combination: use a fixed base with feeding bowls and also make space for foraging every day with hay, herbs & seeds .

Layered design: digging, playing, climbing

Mice are multi-level creatures: they like to dig and climb high. Here's how to build a "logical" mouse enclosure:

  • Substrate : A thick, airy layer of ground cover for rooting, digging, and hiding forage.
  • Middle layer : shelters and routes with houses and tunnels .
  • Upper level : climbing and crossing with platforms and ladders and possibly hammocks as a "stopover" and fall breakers.

Maintenance & hygiene for toys & foraging

  • Check toys daily for wet spots (mice like to mark).
  • Plastic/ceramic : Clean and dry thoroughly before returning to the enclosure.
  • Wood/cardboard : wipe/clean locally and allow to dry thoroughly; replace when saturated.
  • For urine smell you can use enzyme cleaners (useful for wooden items): see urine spray .
  • Change 1–2 items per week (not all at once) for continued challenge.

Checklist: Active mouse habitat with toys and foraging

For a good foundation, please review this list:

Daily foraging moment (scatter food/hiding/puzzle)
Minimum 1–2 climbing routes (bridge/rope/ladder) per stay
Sufficient hiding places (so that low-ranking animals also have peace)
Toys are partially changed weekly (small, smart, not everything)
Daily check for damage, loose threads or sharp edges
Basics remain in order: food, water and hygiene are always a priority

Safety warnings

  • Always hang toys securely and stably , and avoid any free-falling heights. Provide intermediate stops (platforms/hammocks) as a route.
  • Check rope/bridges for wear and replace if there are fraying, loose parts or sharp edges.
  • Use foraging toys with small rewards and keep them attainable; puzzles that are too difficult will cause frustration.
  • Choose materials that are suitable for rodents. Not sure? Always combine it with plenty of gnawing material so that "demolishing everything" isn't the only outlet.
  • If you see any wounds, lameness, or unusual behavior, contact a veterinarian.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Mouse Toys & Foraging

How many toys do mice need?
Better "smart" than "lots." Start with 1-2 climbing routes , 1 foraging option , and plenty of hiding places . Rotate a small section weekly to keep things interesting without overstimulating.

Are hanging toys safe for mice?
Yes, as long as it's securely fastened and you prevent falls. Provide intermediate platforms (platform/hammock) and check for wear and tear regularly.

What's the difference between "toys" and "foraging toys"?
Toys often revolve around climbing, destroying, and exploring. Foraging toys turn eating into an activity: searching, pushing, or working for a reward. This is a great way to combat boredom.

My mice are peeing on everything... what now?
That's normal (mark it). Choose items that are easy to clean, change cardboard more often, and use an enzyme cleaner if necessary. For more inspiration, you can also look at mouse cage accessories to help you organize your space more efficiently.
