Product description

Trixie Climbing Rope for rodents, ferrets, and birds

The Trixie Climbing Rope is a flexible cotton rope for animals that enjoy climbing, balancing, and using their enclosure on multiple levels. You can attach the rope to the bars to create extra routes, transitions, or hanging spots in the cage or aviary.

This climbing rope is especially fun for real climbers such as mice, rats, pygmy rats, ferrets, and birds. For Chinese dwarf hamsters, the rope may only be suitable if used low, safely, and within easy reach. For common hamsters and most dwarf hamsters, hanging climbing toys are usually less logical, as they are less skilled climbers and have a poorer ability to judge depth.

In short

  • Flexible cotton climbing rope
  • Available in 37 cm, 66 cm and 75 cm
  • Diameters: approx. ø 1.6 cm, ø 1.8 cm and ø 3 cm
  • Suitable for true climbers such as mice, rats, pygmy rats, ferrets, and birds.
  • Offer only under supervision and check regularly for wear

Advantages of the Trixie Climbing Rope

Made of cotton
Bendable and therefore can be positioned in various ways
Easy to attach to bars
Provides extra routes and climbing opportunities at the accommodation
Combines nicely with hanging toys , platforms, and hammocks

Why choose a climbing rope?

A climbing rope makes the enclosure more active. Instead of using only horizontal space, a rope allows you to make better use of the height and spaces between areas. This is particularly interesting for animals that enjoy climbing, balancing, and creating routes from one place to another.

For mice, a climbing rope can become part of a route between platforms, houses, and hanging spots. For rats and pygmy rats, the rope is fun as an extra challenge in the cage, especially when combined with larger resting places such as hammocks and platforms. For ferrets and birds, the rope can also be used as a playful climbing element, provided it is securely and properly attached.

The rope is flexible, allowing you to place it straight, slightly bent, or as a connection. This way, you can easily adapt the setup to the enclosure and the way your animal moves.

Which size do you choose?

  • 37 cm: compact variant for smaller routes, mouse traps, or short connections between two points.
  • 66 cm: a nice medium size for rats, dwarf rats, and larger climbing routes in a wire cage.
  • 75 cm: longest and thickest variant for spacious cages, rats, ferrets, or larger setups where more length is needed.

Choose the size based on your animal, the distance you want to cover, and the available space in the enclosure. For rats and pygmy rats, the longer variants are often the most practical, as they provide more room to really create a route.

How do you use the Trixie Climbing Rope?

  • Securely attach the climbing rope to the bars or to a safe attachment point.
  • Make sure the rope cannot slip when your animal climbs on it or pulls on it.
  • Use the rope as a connection between platforms, hammocks, small houses, or other stable places.
  • Place sufficient safe containment under the rope, such as bedding, platforms, or other fixtures.
  • Regularly check that the rope, the fastening, and the ends are still neat.

Do not hang the rope as the only high route in the enclosure. Animals must always be able to easily step on and off via stable parts. A sturdy attachment is especially important for rats, pygmy rats, and ferrets, as they can pull more forcefully on the rope than small mice.

For which animals is the Trixie Climbing Rope suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a climbing route, connection, and playful element of a well-designed mouse enclosure. Ensure safe routes and soft catching under the rope.
  • Rat: suitable as an extra climbing challenge and route in the rat cage. For adult rats, preferably choose a longer and thicker variant.
  • Dwarf ridge: suitable as a route, balance point, and climbing element. Combine the rope with hammocks, platforms, and other resting spots.
  • Ferret: suitable as a playful climbing element in a suitable setup. Check very carefully that the attachment remains secure.
  • Bird: suitable as a perch and climbing route in a bird enclosure or aviary, provided the rope is properly fitted and securely attached.
  • Chinese dwarf hamster: only suitable for low, safe placement. This species climbs better than many other hamsters, but still requires a secure setup.

For common hamsters, most dwarf hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, this climbing rope is usually less logical as a standard enclosure feature. For these animals, it is better to choose low tunnels, hiding places, stable platforms, or natural gnawing material that better suits their way of moving.

Material and dimensions

  • Material: cotton
  • Dimensions: approx. 37 × 1.6 cm, 66 × 1.8 cm and 75 × 3 cm
  • Diameter: approx. ø 1.6 cm, ø 1.8 cm and ø 3 cm
  • Use: climbing route, connection, balance point, or hanging play element
  • Mounting: suspension system for attachment to bars
  • Safety advice: only offer under supervision and check regularly for wear

The climbing rope is made of cotton and is flexible. Check the material regularly for fraying, loose threads, or damage. Remove the rope from the enclosure if your animal starts actively pulling on the fabric or if the rope is no longer firm.

Cleaning and maintenance

  • Regularly remove hair, dust, and bedding from the rope.
  • Check if the rope is still firmly attached to the bars.
  • Check for fraying, loose threads, and signs of wear.
  • Let the rope dry thoroughly if it has become damp.
  • Replace the rope when it is damaged or can no longer be securely attached.

Preferably use the rope in a dry place. Cotton can absorb moisture; therefore, do not place the climbing rope directly under a water bottle or in a place where it gets wet quickly.

Good to know

  • Use the climbing rope primarily for animals that are good climbers.
  • Check the fastening regularly, especially for rats, pygmy rats, and ferrets.
  • Remove the rope when loose threads, fraying, or damage occurs.
  • Always ensure safe routes to and from the rope.
  • Do not hang the rope too high without catches or intermediate platforms.

Frequently asked questions about the Trixie Climbing Rope

Is the Trixie Climbing Rope suitable for mice?

Yes, mice are good climbers and can use the climbing rope as a route, connection, or playful part of the enclosure. However, ensure safe routes and sufficient safety netting under the rope.

Is the climbing rope suitable for rats?

Yes, the climbing rope is suitable for rats. For adult rats, the longer and thicker versions are usually the most comfortable. Check the attachment regularly, as rats can climb and pull strongly.

Is the climbing rope suitable for pygmy rats?

Yes, pygmy rats can use the climbing rope as a climbing route and balance point. Combine the rope with hammocks, platforms, and other stable resting places.

Can I use this climbing rope for hamsters?

For common hamsters and most dwarf hamsters, we do not recommend this climbing rope as standard hanging climbing toy. It can only be used low and safely with Chinese dwarf hamsters, as they are better climbers than many other hamsters.

Which size climbing rope should I choose?

The 37 cm variant is handy for short routes and smaller enclosures. The 66 cm variant is suitable for longer connections. The 75 cm variant is the longest and thickest and fits well in larger cages or with stronger climbers such as rats and ferrets.

Can the climbing rope be used for birds?

Yes, the climbing rope can also be used for birds as a perch or climbing route. However, check that the thickness and length are suitable for the bird species and that the rope is securely attached.

What do I do if the rope starts to fray?

Remove the rope from the enclosure if fraying, loose threads, or damage occur. Loose threads should not remain in the enclosure.

Can the rope remain hanging in the enclosure?

This is possible provided your animal uses the rope properly and the attachment remains secure. However, do check the rope regularly for wear, fraying, and loose fastenings.
