When it comes to the coat care of Degus, a sandbox is a must. The animals love to roll in the sand to clean their fur. The sand has an abrasive and degreasing effect. In summer it even provides a little cooling thanks to its degreasing properties. It is important that the sand does not contain sharp crystals. Chinchilla sand, for example, is very suitable. By giving the animals the opportunity to take a sand bath, the protective and insulating function of the coat can be well maintained.
NB! Never use shell sand in the sandbox. This sand is too sharp for the Degu's skin.
Bathing or digging?
There are two ways to offer sand to your Degus. Initially, the animals need a sandbox with chinchilla sand to care for their fur, but on the other hand, a sandbox with digging/play sand is also great fun for the animals!
