Product description

Getzoo Round Sandpit with Lid – wooden sandpit in 21, 27 or 30 cm

The Getzoo Round Sandpit with Lid is a beautiful wooden sandpit for small rodents who love to roll, dig, sniff, and groom their fur. The round shape and partial lid create a sheltered sand spot that looks natural and fits beautifully into hamsterscaping, mousescaping, and gerbilscaping.

At DRD, when it comes to sandboxes, we focus primarily on size, entry, stability, filling, and the animal for which the sandbox is truly practical. This Getzoo sandbox is available in three sizes: Ø 21 cm, Ø 27 cm, and Ø 30 cm. This allows you to match the size to your animal, the available space, and how you intend to use the sand bath.

Which size do you choose?

The difference between the 3 sizes

XS Ø 21 cm: the compact size. Choose this for mice, small dwarf hamsters, or an enclosure where you want to create a small, neat sand zone. The tray has a low height, making it easy to fit into many animal enclosures.

S Ø 27 cm: the most all-round size. This is more spacious than the XS, making it comfortable for dwarf hamsters and small to medium-sized Syrian hamsters/golden hamsters. This can also be a nice size for gerbils if you are looking for a compact sand zone.

M Ø 30 cm: the most spacious variant. Choose this one when you want more bathing and digging space, for example for larger hamsters or gerbils, or when you want to create a more distinct sand zone in the enclosure. For chinchillas and degus, this is the most logical size within this series, although a larger sand bath often remains more pleasant when they roll extensively.

The main difference therefore lies in the available space for rolling and digging. The larger the animal and the more actively the sand bath is used, the more logical it is to choose a larger size.

Why choose a sandbox with a round lid?

A sand bath is an important part of the enclosure for many small rodents. Dwarf hamsters, hamsters, mice, and gerbils use sand to roll, dig, sniff, and groom their fur. A permanent sand zone provides a clear place for this behavior within the enclosure.

The round lid gives the sandbox a sheltered appearance. Many small animals appreciate not being completely exposed while bathing or digging. At the same time, the lid helps to better limit flying sand, although enthusiastic digging can of course always send some sand outside the box.

Thanks to its wooden design, this sandbox blends beautifully with natural materials such as cork, moss, wooden houses, bedding, tunnels, and dried decorations. As a result, the sandbox does not feel like a standalone object, but rather as part of a well-thought-out natural design.

For which animals is the Getzoo Sandpit Round Lid suitable?

  • Mouse: suitable as a sand or sniffing spot. For mice, Ø 21 cm is often spacious enough, but Ø 27 cm can be nice if you have extra space.
  • Dwarf hamster: very suitable as a sand bath for Russian dwarf hamsters, Campbell's dwarf hamsters, Roborovski dwarf hamsters, and Chinese dwarf hamsters. The Ø 21 cm is suitable for small animals, but Ø 27 cm provides more room to move around.
  • Hamster: suitable for Syrian hamsters/golden hamsters, especially in sizes Ø 27 cm and Ø 30 cm. For larger golden hamsters, Ø 30 cm is usually the most comfortable choice within this series.
  • Gerbil: suitable as a sand bath and digging area. Gerbils enjoy rolling in sand and digging actively, making Ø 27 cm or Ø 30 cm often more practical than the smallest size.
  • Chinchilla: the Ø 30 cm variant can be used compactly if the size is suitable, but for chinchillas, a larger and sturdier sand bath is often more pleasant for intensive daily bathing.
  • Degu: the Ø 30 cm variant can be used compactly if the size and placement are suitable. For degus, a larger sand area is often more logical when they roll and dig frequently.

This sandpit is not intended as a sand bath for dwarf rats and rats. Rats do not need a sand bath for grooming, and fine sand is less suitable for their sensitive airways. For rats, it is preferable to choose dust-free digging boxes, tunnels, hammocks, foraging areas, and Ratscaping. This sandpit is also not suitable as a sand bath for guinea pigs and rabbits; they have different care and setup needs.

Use in hamsterscaping

In a hamsterscaping enclosure, a sand bath is a fixed basic zone. Place the sand bath in a stable spot, for example next to a multi-chamber house, cork tunnel, exercise wheel, or foraging area. This way, the sand bath becomes part of a logical route through the enclosure.

For dwarf hamsters, a sheltered sand spot is often particularly pleasant. Some animals roll actively, while others dig or use the sand bath as a grooming area. Thanks to the round shape and the lid, the sand bath looks calm and natural within the decor.

Choose the size based on your animal and the available space. For a small dwarf hamster, Ø 21 cm may be sufficient, but Ø 27 cm offers more comfort. For a Syrian hamster/golden hamster, preferably choose Ø 27 cm or Ø 30 cm.

Use for gerbils

For gerbils, a sand bath is almost indispensable. Gerbils enjoy using sand to groom their fur and find digging and rolling interesting. The Getzoo Round Sand Bath with Lid can be nicely placed as a permanent sand zone next to tunnels, deep bedding, and sturdy houses.

Because gerbils actively dig, a larger size is often more comfortable. The Ø 27 cm or Ø 30 cm variant provides more room to roll and burrow. Regularly check that the sand bath is stable and that the sand remains dry and clean.

How do you fill the sandbox?

Always use fine, soft bath sand suitable for small rodents in this sandbox. Fill the sandbox with a practical layer of approximately 2 to 4 cm. For animals that like to dig a bit deeper, you can fill it slightly more generously, as long as your animal can still move around freely and the lid retains its sheltered function.

  • Use fine bath sand or chinchilla sand suitable for rodents.
  • Do not use shell sand or sharp bird sand.
  • Do not fill the container all the way to the rim.
  • Regularly scoop out soiled spots.
  • Replace the sand when it looks dirty, damp, or dusty.

Handy included: suitable bath sand

For this sandbox, use fine bath sand or chinchilla sand suitable for small rodents. Bath sand is intended for rolling, digging, and grooming the fur. Do not use shell sand or sharp bird sand.

Can also be used as a compact digging bucket

In addition to a sand bath, you can also use the container as a small digging area with a suitable filling, such as coconut fiber, cork, or another appropriate digging material. This can be fun when you want to add extra texture to a natural setup.

For hamsters and gerbils, usually use bath sand when using the cage as a grooming area. If you primarily want to create a digging or sniffing area, you can choose a different filling that suits your animal and the rest of the enclosure.

Cleaning & maintenance

Check the sand regularly and scoop out soiled spots. Replace the sand as soon as it looks dirty, damp, or dusty. How often this is necessary depends on the animal species, usage, and the location of the sandbox in the enclosure.

You can clean the wooden sandbox specifically with a slightly damp cloth. Do not use too much water and let the wood dry thoroughly before refilling the sandbox. Wood is a natural material and stays at its best when not soaked.

Check the sandbox regularly for wear, loose parts, or gnaw marks. Gerbils, in particular, may use wooden furnishings more intensively than hamsters or mice.

Good to know

The Getzoo Round Sand Tray with Lid helps create a distinct sand zone in the enclosure. The lid limits spillage but does not prevent it completely. Hamsters and gerbils can dig and roll enthusiastically, meaning some sand can inevitably end up outside the tray.

Choose a size that is large enough. For small mice or dwarf hamsters, Ø 21 cm might fit, but Ø 27 cm often provides more freedom of movement. For Syrian hamsters and gerbils, Ø 27 cm or Ø 30 cm is usually more logical. The Ø 30 cm variant is the most spacious choice within this series.

Use the sandbox with suitable bath sand and not with sharp types of sand. Place the box stably, preferably on a flat area or platform, so that it does not sink sideways into deep bedding.
