Want to keep it practical (and still winter-proof)? Then go for this basic combination: 1) deep digging layer + 2) warm nesting material + 3) sheltered hiding place . Only then add extras like winter herb mixes or support products.
1) Heat from the ground (digging = regulating)
- Choose ground cover that can form tunnels well and can be applied generously.
- Gerbils naturally live underground; a thick layer helps make the enclosure feel more stable.
2) Nesting material for comfort
- Kapok (well loosened, as a supplement) for extra softness and warmth.
- Paper fibers/crinkle to drag, shape and decorate.
3) Winter support & rewards
- Winter herb/sniffing mixes for relaxed foraging (no "busy" stimuli, but still a challenge).
- Support products are used in a targeted manner, especially when an animal needs extra attention.
