Degu hay – the most important basic feed for fibre, dental wear and active bowel function
Degu hay isn't a "supplementary food," but the foundation of their daily diet. Degus are herbivores that naturally consume a lot of fiber and eat small portions throughout the day. Unlimited hay supports their natural feeding behavior, encourages prolonged chewing activity, and provides structure for stable digestion. At DRD Rodent Shop®, we select hay that meets the needs of degus: textured, fragrant, and enjoyable to nibble on for extended periods. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we're happy to help you choose. Always combine hay with a suitable basic diet from Degu Food and additional activities like Degu gnawing materials .
Timothy is popular with fiber-conscious diets: firm, long and pleasant to chew on for a long time.

Why is degu hay indispensable?
Degus are built on fiber. Hay provides roughage and structure, requiring them to chew for a long time. This chewing is important for natural tooth wear and helps support the "small bites throughout the day" eating pattern. Therefore, always provide unlimited hay and refresh it daily.
How do you recognize good hay for degus?
You can quickly recognize good hay for degus by a few practical signs. It should smell fresh, not musty or dusty. The stalks should preferably be long and crisp (textured), with a natural color (not gray or wet). Hay that quickly "evaporates" into dust is less pleasant to use and should be avoided.
Which type of hay is right for your degu?
There isn't one perfect type of hay for every degu. Many owners alternate between meadow hay and timothy hay to keep things interesting. Herbal or flower varieties can help make hay attractive, but they should still be used as a diversion alongside unlimited basic hay. Want extra enrichment? Combine hay with forage products or use a hay ball or hay chunks as an activity.
Checklist: choosing good hay
✔ Always offer unlimited hay and refresh it daily.
✔ Choose hay that smells fresh (not musty) and is not extremely dusty.
✔ Go for long, crunchy strands for more structure and chewing time.
✔ You can alternate with timothy or herbal hay for variety, but always keep hay as a base.
Storage & feeding
✔ Store hay in a dry and airy place (not closed in a damp place).
✔ Preferably use a manger or feeding system to keep the hay cleaner.
✔ Combine with suitable basic food: Degoe food and safe gnawing products: Degoe gnawing material .
FAQ
How much degu hay should I give?
In practice: always unlimited . Make sure hay is available throughout the day and refresh it daily.
What if my degu is picky about hay?
Try to vary the structure (meadow hay/timothy) and occasionally use herbal or blossom hay to keep it attractive.
Is “hay with vegetables” also suitable?
As a change it can be fun, but always let degu hay remain the basis and choose additions consciously.
✔ Degoe hay = basic food: unlimited, rich in fiber and structure
✔ Supports natural chewing behavior and tooth wear
