How do you use nesting material for your rat?
Rats like to sleep in a house, a sputnik or hammock. They love soft places to sleep, so give the animals plenty of 'sleeping material', as we call it. A little toilet paper can make many rats very happy, they immediately take it with them to their house or hammock. Because toilet paper quickly starts to smell, we have made a selection of nesting material in this category that is very suitable for rats.
Which nesting material to use and when?
Nesting material is a broad concept, because it also includes cushions and baskets. Cushions and baskets fall on their own, they do not need any further filling, because they are nice and soft in themselves.
Nesting material in the form of litter/ground cover such as minihemp nesting material, cotton or paper shavings bedding are ideal for a house that is placed on the bottom of the enclosure. Rats take this bedding to the house, where they can build a cozy nest with it. Nesting material in the form of litter is less suitable for on a plateau or in a hanging house, because it falls down easily.
Mats come in different sizes, colors and materials. Mats are ideal as a floor covering or as a layer on a platform. For example, the hemp mat is a disposable mat that must be replaced with a new one after a while. Mats made of fleece material can be washed and reused. The hemp mat in particular is a special mat for rats. He is often picked apart by the Rats and taken to the dormitory; a real 'drag material'. When placing a mat on the bottom or on the platform, soft nesting material is still required for extra padding in the house or sleeping area.
Coconut can be used as ground cover and as nesting material. Coconut is low in dust and particularly absorbent. It holds moisture and odors firmly. Coconut is also one of the 'trailing materials': The rats will like to work with the fibers of the coconut.
Blankets are also very nice as nesting material for the rats. They will love to hide in it and drag it around. An advantage of a blanket is that it can be reused.
Plush tunnels are also wonderful to sleep in. Nice and soft and warm during colder days. A big advantage is that several rats can lie in the tunnel and the ventilation remains good because of both open sides!
Because rats have very sensitive airways, it is important that they are not given dusty nesting materials. Dust can irritate the respiratory tract and even cause serious health problems in very sensitive animals.
