Rat nesting material, cushions & baskets – soft sleeping places where your rats like to snuggle together
Rats are true social animals: they prefer to sleep together, preferably in a place that feels warm, soft, and sheltered. With good nesting material (sleeping material), they can "decorate" their favorite home or hangout, and with cushions and baskets, you can instantly create a comfortable resting zone in the cage.
In this category, you'll find a mix of nesting materials to take with you and soft sleeping areas like washable mats, pillows, and baskets. Includes practical tips for hygiene, seasons, and safe use. Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011.
Provide at least one extra soft “group area” that can accommodate several rats at once.

Nesting material works best in houses, sputniks and hammocks: rats like to drag it along and make it their own.

With toilets/urine mats in fixed locations, soft materials stay clean for longer and you don't have to change them as often.

Choosing nesting material – quick selection guide
Start with one question: do you mainly want sleeping material (building nests), a fixed soft sleeping place (pillow/basket), or a combination of both?
1) For building nests (dragging material)
- Choose dust-free, soft materials that rats can easily move to homes and hangouts.
- Ideal in combination with houses or hanging shelters.
2) For comfort (cushion, mat or basket)
- Choose washable if you want to keep it practical (changing = fresh again quickly).
- Place a mat/cushion on a plateau as an additional rest zone: see plateaus & ladders .
3) For seasons
- Colder periods: extra soft, warm sleeping areas and more nesting material. Also see rat winter products .
- Warm weather: choose airier/cooler resting spots and offer multiple spots. See Rat summer products .
Tip : Offer at least two soft sleeping areas. This prevents "claiming" and allows the group to choose.
What types of nesting material and soft sleeping places can you find here?
In this category you will mainly encounter these groups (useful for quick selection):
- Nesting material to carry around – for building a cozy nest in houses and hangouts.
- Papery nesting filling / flakes / shavings – often loved because it is light and easy to dose.
- Cotton/hemp-like nesting material – soft and comfortable as a supplement for an extra “nesting feeling”.
- Washable fleece/plush mats and baskets – a quick comfort upgrade, especially nice on platforms or in a quiet corner.
- Cushions and soft sleeping houses/tunnels – warm, sheltered chill-out places where rats like to huddle together.
Use & Placement – How to Make Your Rats Truly “Rat-Proof”
Rats often choose their own preferred sleeping routes. You can help by making the locations logical:
- In houses : provide a handful of dragging material so they can “style” themselves.
- In hanging places (hammock/sputnik): choose soft, stable items that do not fall down immediately.
- On platforms : place a washable mat as a “chill zone” and keep the rest of the cage free for routes.
- Combine with structure : a tunnel or tube next to a soft spot often becomes the favourite rest route ( tunnels & tubes ).
Maintenance & hygiene – keeping soft materials fresh for longer
Rats sometimes mark. That's normal. With a smart routine, nesting material and plush/fleece will stay pleasant much longer:
✔ Spot-clean daily: remove wet spots and crumbs immediately.
✔ Work with toilets and/or urinals in fixed locations.
✔ Washable mats/cushions: use 2 sets (one in the cage, one in the wash).
✔ Always let everything dry completely before putting it back in the cage.
Checklist – Nesting material and soft sleeping places that are “right”
✔ At least 2 soft sleeping zones (choice = peace in the group)
✔ Sleeping gear + a firm soft spot (best of both)
✔ Dust-free and comfortable (great for sensitive airways)
✔ Washable or easy to replace (hygiene without stress)
✔ Cleverly combine with furnishings ( houses , hammocks , plateaus )
Safety
Check soft products regularly for fraying, loose seams, loose filling , and gnawing damage. Replace items that open. Always use nesting material wisely: offer several small portions and see what your rats do with them. If in doubt, choose a washable mat/cushion as a base and add snuggle material as a supplement.
FAQ – rat nesting material, cushions & baskets
How much nesting material do rats need?
Start small and see what your rats do. Some build vigorously, while others primarily use soft spots. Refill when they clearly "drag" to their favorite sleeping spot.
Is a cushion or basket enough, or do I also need nesting material?
A cushion/basket is a ready-made soft spot. Nesting material is the extra "finishing touch" that rats use to build their own nests, especially in houses and hangouts.
How often should I wash fleece/plush?
That depends on your group and routine. Practically speaking, spot-cleaning daily and changing/washing weekly (or sooner) often works. Using two sets is easiest.
My rats are destroying soft furnishings. What now?
Provide plenty of distractions with play, foraging , and gnawing materials . Also, choose washable basics and replace soft items as soon as they become frayed.
