Rat health – support for parasites, wounds, stress and daily resistance

A well-off rat is active, curious, and eats with gusto. However, there may be times when you need some extra support: for parasites/pests, a minor wound, sensitive skin, or when your rat is feeling a little under the weather due to stress (e.g., transportation or changes). In this category, you'll find a carefully selected range of health products for rats – practical, clear, and suitable for everyday life with group animals.

At DRD Rodent Shop® , we focus on helping you make the right choices: what constitutes basic care and prevention , and when it's wise to consult a veterinarian. We've been specializing in rodents and rabbits since 2011.

Parasites & pests
Do you recognize itching/scratching? Choose rat-safe products and treat the area immediately.

Anti-pest spray →
Wound care & skin
For small areas: supportive care, cleaning and close monitoring.

Wound ointment (honey) →
Resistance & recovery
Think of vitamins/gut support, rest and practical feeding when necessary.

Bowel support →

Rat health – quick selection guide

Start with one question: do you mainly want prevention & basic (hygiene/resistance), or is there a specific reason (itching, wound, stress, eating less)?

1) Itching/scratching or suspicious spots

  • Choose rat-safe products from this category (do not use products for dogs/cats).
  • Also address cage hygiene: keep dust low, remove wet spots quickly and clean regularly.

2) Small wound or irritated skin

  • Supportive care and daily monitoring (especially for group animals).
  • Combine with a calm, clean interior so that the area does not continue to rub.

3) Stress, transport or (temporarily) eating less

  • Make transport predictable with a closed, secure transport box and offer peace of mind afterwards.
  • Provide practical support, including calming options or a feeding syringe if advised by a veterinarian.

Not sure if your rat is actually sick? It's best to contact a veterinarian early. Health products are intended as support , not a replacement for diagnosis or treatment.

What can you find in the Rat Health category?

Here you will find a compact but complete selection that is often used in practice with pet rats:

  • Parasites & Pests – Supportive products for the environment and animals.
  • Wound and skin care – such as (honey) ointment or skin care solutions.
  • Eyes – care products for the eye area.
  • Vitamins & supplements – multivitamins and targeted supplements.
  • Bowel support – products for intestinal balance/condition.
  • Rest & Stressful Moments – Support around stimuli/transport.
  • Practical feeding – aids such as feeding syringes or feeding sets.

Prevention: the foundation that really makes a difference

A strong foundation can prevent a lot of hassle: fresh air, clean routes, and minimal irritation to the respiratory tract. Consider:

Use & Routine – Safe and Practical

Keep it simple and consistent. Choose products that suit your situation (group, cage layout, cleaning routine) and always check the product information.

Start with the basics: clean cage, dust-free, sufficient resting places ( houses and hammocks ).
In case of parasites/pests, preferably also use an environmental approach (cleaning and checking materials).
In stressful moments: combine rest, predictable handling and, if necessary, a supporting product such as a calming spray .
If there is abnormal behaviour (not eating/drinking, shortness of breath, rapid deterioration): contact a veterinarian.

Checklist – Rat health that “works”

Dust-free ground covering and a fresh cage routine
Smart hygiene solutions with toilets/urinary mats
Basic supplies: something for wounds/skin, something for environmental hygiene, and a practical "emergency option" (e.g., feeding syringe)
Products specifically suitable for rodents (no dog/cat products)
In case of doubt or clear complaints: contact a veterinarian

Safety

Always use health products appropriate for the species and according to the product information. Be careful with group animals: check daily that an area is not being licked or irritated by cage mates. Avoid strong odors/irritating fumes in the cage and ensure that everything is thoroughly rinsed and dried after cleaning. For severe symptoms (shortness of breath, lethargy, not eating or drinking, rapid deterioration), a veterinarian is the safest and fastest route.

FAQ – rat health

Can I just use a dog/cat product?
Preferably not. Many products for other animal species are not appropriately dosed or suitable. Choose rat-safe products or consult your veterinarian.

What do I do if I itch or scratch?
First, check the basics: dust, hygiene, and wet areas. If you see significant skin irritation or if it persists, choose a suitable product from this category. If in doubt, contact a veterinarian.

When are vitamins or gut support useful?
As a supplement to a good basic diet, or when you need temporary extra support. Always keep it in line with the diet and pay particular attention to the cause if your rat is acting "differently."

My rat has red around its nose or eyes – is that blood?
This is often porphyrin (which can indicate stress or discomfort). It's a sign to pay closer attention to the animal's well-being, hygiene, and any medical causes. If you're unsure, contact your veterinarian.
