Product description

Beaphar Anti-scab 75 ml

Veterinary medicinal product to combat mange mite in guinea pigs and other rodents. Anti-Scab is a remedy against scabies mites. The first signs of mite infection are reddening of the skin and severe itching. The skin swells and wounds and scabs form around the eyes and ears. Infections can occur in these wounds, which increases the animal's pain. The animal will eat and drink less. Anti Scabies is an effective product to combat scabies mite.

Against worms, lice, mites
✔ Effective for 4 weeks

What Are Mites?

Mites are very small and almost invisible to the naked eye. There are different types of mites, one type of mite causes more discomfort than the other. The complaints of your rabbit, guinea pig or other rodent are therefore also related to the type of mite that the animal suffers from.

Your pet can get mites through contact with them in the hay or straw. Wild birds, rats and mice can also spread mites. Mites can also be passed on easily from infected animals. They also hide in the bedding and cracks and seams of the coop. So good hygiene of your rabbit, guinea pig or hamster's stay is also very important to prevent mites. Did you know that some of your pet's mites are even contagious to humans?

What types of mites are there?

Scabies mite

Mange is common in guinea pigs and other rodents. Scabies is caused by a mite that literally burrows into the skin. This really causes a lot of discomfort for your guinea pig or rodent:

- Extreme itching, which can even cause a seizure
- Lots of scratching and biting
- Loss of fur and bald spots
- Unexpected jumps
- Scabs possibly resulting in bacterial infections
- Wounds often start around the lips and nose, later on the rest of the body
- Losing weight and less appetite

If your pet suffers from mange, be alert to your own skin. Scabies is also contagious to humans.

fur mite

The Cheyletiella is the 'fur mite'. This mite species causes little or no itching. In general, this mite is not very contagious to humans, it could possibly cause a mild skin infection in humans. You can recognize an infection in your rabbit, guinea pig or other rodent by the following symptoms:

- Flakes in the fur / dandruff
- Loose hair
- Bald spots
- Possibly dark dots on the hair
- No or very mild itching

The fur mite is best determined by combing with a very fine comb (e.g. flea comb) and then viewed under a microscope. In case of an infestation with fur mites, the mites and eggs are then visible.

Mites in rodents and rabbits

You can tackle both fur mites and mange mites with Beaphar Anti-Mange for rabbits and guinea pigs. You use this effective spray against the hair direction, so that the liquid reaches the skin. After 1 week you repeat the treatment. Smaller rodents can be treated with Beaphar Anti-Parasite . A handy squeeze pipette that you administer in the neck of the animal. This pipette is effective for 4 weeks.

Other tips for combating mites

- Keep infected animals separate from others, as mites are highly contagious
- Treat all rodents to prevent re-infestation
- Also ensure good hygiene. Remove the entire floor covering once a week and - clean the enclosure thoroughly with, for example, Beaphar Multi-Cleaner
- Also treat the stay with Mite Blocker Combi ; a product without insecticides and very effective against mites
- Also consider cleaning/replacing toys and houses in the enclosure, especially in the seams and cracks of wooden toys/houses, the mites can sit and infect your animal again and again

With these tips, your guinea pig, rabbit, hamster or other small rodent will soon be in top shape again! Of course, mites are not the only cause that can cause changes to the skin and coat. Mold and lice can also be the cause of this.

What are lice

Lice are larger than mites and therefore visible in the fur with good eyesight or a magnifying glass. They are gray and a few millimeters in size. They move a lot slower than, for example, fleas. If your rabbit, guinea pig, hamster or other small rodent has lice, you don't have to worry that you will suffer from it yourself. Animal lice do not transfer to humans. If you keep several (species of) rodents together, it is wise to treat them all.

Recognize lice in rabbits and rodents

Lice in rodents and rabbits do not drink blood. Lice walk on the skin and hair and feed on skin flakes. They lay their eggs on the hair, which we call nits. You can recognize lice in your rabbit or rodent as follows:

- Rougher, brush-like coat
- Flakes in the fur
- Usually no itching
- Sometimes the animal behaves restlessly
- White dots (nits) in the fur, visible with good eyes/magnifying glass
- Later stage: bald spots/scabs

Control lice in rabbits and rodents

You can easily and effectively combat lice in rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and other small rodents with Beaphar Anti-Parasite. Choose the variant that is tailored to the weight of your pet and read the package leaflet for the dosage. You administer this squeeze pipette in the neck of your animal and then it works for four weeks. In the meantime, it is important to also apply the tips below so that your animal does not become infected again after these four weeks.

Other tips:

- It is wise to treat all your rodents and rabbits, even if it seems that they do not have lice. This way you prevent reinfection as much as possible.
- Good hygiene of the accommodation is also very important. Thoroughly clean the enclosure with Beaphar Multi-Cleaner and replace the bedding at least once a week.
- In addition, you can treat the enclosure with Mite Blocker Combi . This product does not contain insecticides and is very effective against lice.
- Do not forget to clean / replace toys and houses in the accommodation, especially in the seams and cracks of wooden toys / houses, the lice can sit and infect your rabbit or rodent again and again.
