Want a habitat that looks natural and truly adds value for your pet? With hazelnut, birch, and beech, you can build shelters, crossings, climbing and gnawing areas that perfectly complement natural behavior. Consider hazelnut bridges (flexible and versatile), birch tunnels (robust and sturdy), and beech houses (sturdy and sleek). Ideal for hamster scaping, gerbil scaping, and any habitat that needs a little more life.
Specialist since 2011 – so you not only get a great selection, but also selection assistance that works in practice.
Birch and beech are robust and durable. Hazelnut is flexible and ideal for creating paths, fences, or "bridges." It complements natural landscaping beautifully.
Combine with a good base of ground cover and create hiding routes, crossings, and hideouts. Many items can be (partially) incorporated into the ground.
Natural shapes provide tranquility and shelter in the enclosure. Complete the experience with play and foraging for additional "searching opportunities."
Why choose hazelnut, birch and beech?
These three types of wood are often used in natural cage furnishings because they are practical and beautiful:
- Hazelnut – flexible and versatile. Perfect for bridges, barriers, and pathways (also as a "gate" for deep ground cover).
- Birch – sturdy with a natural texture. Popular as a birch tunnel or shelter; a sturdy addition to any habitat.
- Beech – hard and stable. Great for sturdy houses and accessories that need to last a while, even for larger animals.
What can you find in this category?
In this selection you will mainly find furnishings that you can use immediately for shelter and route building:
- Hazelnut bridges – as a bridge, tunnel, step, partition or edge for an excavation zone.
- Birch tunnels and hideouts – ideal as a hiding place or as a starting point for an underground route.
- Beechwood houses – sturdy sleeping and resting places, beautiful in a natural setting.
- Accessories & extensions – combine with pipes & tunnels , houses , and platforms & ladders for a complete route.
How to choose the right size (without the hassle)
The best product is the one that suits the size of your animal and how you use the enclosure:
- Dwarf hamsters, mice, gerbils : choose tunnels/bridges with sufficient passage and multiple routes, so that "busy traffic" flows smoothly.
- Golden hamsters : it's best to use a slightly wider area (wide passages and stable bridges) – especially if you're spreading the bedding deeper or working at height.
- Guinea pigs and rabbits : Choose sturdy, spacious enclosures without narrow passages. Stability and space are paramount here.
Tip: Do you primarily want hiding routes ? Then combine wood with additional cover like ground cover and several houses. Do you primarily want routes and height ? Then work with bridges, platforms, and safe steps.
Design tips: how to make it truly "natural"
- Create zones : a digging zone (deeper spreading) and a “route zone” with bridges/plateaus works surprisingly well.
- Half-bury : place a birch tunnel partly in the ground cover so that your animal can "form" its own entrances.
- Bridge as a fence : place a hazelnut bridge upright as an edge to keep ground cover in place or to mark off a corner.
- Mix with other natural materials for variety, such as cork & bamboo , willow or bark wood .
Maintenance & hygiene
- Spot clean : remove wet/used spots and wipe the surface clean.
- Dry cleaning : brushing or wiping with a slightly damp cloth usually works best.
- Do not soak : wood stays nicer and stronger if you do not keep it wet for long periods of time.
- Enzyme sprays often work well for urine odor. See: urine spray or the Hygienic Clean category.
Checklist: hazelnut, birch & beech used correctly
Quick check before you start decorating:
✔ You choose a size that suits your animal species (better a little wider than too small)
✔ There is at least one good hiding place (or several routes with cover)
✔ Bridges/platforms are stable and cannot tip over
✔ You combine with ground cover for digging and hiding behavior
✔ You have a simple routine: spot clean + occasionally rearrange for variety
Safety warnings
- Always check natural products for splinters or sharp edges (especially after intensive gnawing).
- Don't choose tunnels or passages that are too narrow ; wider is more comfortable and prevents getting stuck.
- Avoid keeping wood wet for long periods of time; replace if moisture persists or the material becomes soft.
- For avid rodents: offer extra gnawing material so that the furnishings stay nice for longer.
FAQ – frequently asked questions
Are hazelnut, birch and beech suitable for nibbling?
Yes, this type of natural design is chosen precisely because gnawing and exploring are part of it. Always choose a suitable size and check for wear and tear regularly.
What is more convenient: a tunnel or a bridge?
A tunnel provides an immediate sense of shelter (peace/safety). A bridge is ideal for creating routes, height differences, or demarcations. In practice, the combination is often the most fun.
Can I use a birch tunnel in a digging zone?
Definitely. Partially burying a den often works great: your pet will create its own entrances, and it immediately feels "underground." Combine it with ground cover .
How do I clean wooden furniture?
Spot cleaning, dry brushing, and a light dusting is usually sufficient. For stubborn urine odors, you can use enzyme cleaners from Hygienic Clean or urine spray .
