Bunny Nature about the Dwarf Hamster
The dwarf hamster is a small, granivorous (seed-eating) mammal and belongs to the order of the rodents. In nature he is a loner and he has a life expectancy of 2 to 2.5 years. With a body length of 11 cm and a weight of about 45 g, it is clearly smaller than the golden hamster.
The dwarf hamster is originally from the south of Russia, Mongolia and the north of China. There he lives in dry semi-desert and steppe areas and he is active from dusk to night.
The nutritional needs of fast dwarf hamsters are multiple. In nature they mainly feed on various seeds and insects
Dwarf hamsters have incisor teeth that continue to grow. The feed must therefore allow the necessary wear of the teeth (for example by seeds that can be peeled).
The stomach consists of two 'chambers', namely the gizzard and the glandular stomach.
Small blind bowel
As a 'granivorous' (seed-eating) animal, the dwarf hamster has a small appendix. He can only process raw fibers to a limited extent. The optimum raw fiber content in the feed is therefore below 10%.
Animal proteins are required for the metabolism. The quantity must be carefully adapted to the needs of the animal.
High energy requirement
Dwarf hamsters are real energy bundles. They have a greater energy requirement based on their high metabolism.
Sensitive to diabetes
To avoid diabetes, the feed should not contain fruit or other sugar-rich components, and fresh fruit should not be fed.
