Bunny Nature about the Dwarf Hamster
The dwarf hamster is a small, granivorous (seed-eating) mammal belonging to the rodent order. In nature it is a loner and has a life expectancy of 2 to 2.5 years. With a body length of 11 cm and a weight of approx. 45 g, it is clearly smaller than the golden hamster.
The dwarf hamster is native to southern Russia, Mongolia and northern China. There it lives in dry semi-desert and steppe areas and is active from dusk to night.
The nutritional needs of fast dwarf hamsters are manifold. In nature they mainly feed on various seeds and insects
Dwarf hamsters have incisors that keep growing. The feed must therefore allow for the necessary wear of the teeth (for example by seeds that can be hulled).
The stomach consists of two 'chambers', namely the front stomach and the glandular stomach.
As a 'granivorous' (seed-eating) animal, the dwarf hamster has a small appendix. It can only process raw fibers to a limited extent. The optimal crude fiber content in the feed is therefore below 10%.
Animal proteins are required for the metabolism. The amount must be carefully adjusted to the needs of the animal.
High energy requirement
Dwarf hamsters are real bundles of energy. Due to their high metabolism, they have a greater energy requirement.
Sensitive to diabetes
To avoid diabetes, the food should not contain fruit or other sugary components and fresh fruit should not be fed.
