Degu drinking bottles & water bowls – clean drinking water, hygienic and suitable for real rodents

Fresh, clean drinking water is essential for any degu's basic care. You can offer water via a water bowl (natural drinking behavior) or a drinking bottle (practical and often cleaner in the enclosure). What works best depends on your setup and your animals. Degus are true rodents: if a plastic bottle is within reach, it can become an attractive gnawing option if they become bored or lack gnawing material. Therefore, glass is often the most "care-free" choice, especially in active enclosures. As specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011, we select solutions that work well in practice: sturdy drinking bottles, smart holders, and hygienic water bowls. Always combine sufficient gnawing material for degus and a logical feeding/drinking area with degu food bowls .

Glass drinking bottles (recommended)
Usually the best choice for degus: sturdy, hygienic and less interesting to gnaw on.

Trixie glass drinking bottle →
Plastic drinking bottles (only when placed cleverly)
Practical, but preferably placed in a way that makes gnawing difficult. Always combine with plenty of gnawing material and check regularly.

Cosy ergonomic drinking bottle →
Drinking bottle holders & water bowls
Convenient for stable mounting and a tidy drinking area. Water bowls (stainless steel/ceramic) are hygienic and fit neatly into a fixed feeding area.

Water bottle or water bowl: which is right for your degus?

A water bowl often complements natural drinking behavior, but can become soiled more quickly by bedding or sand. A water bottle stays clean longer in many enclosures and is practical for daily care. In practice, many degu owners choose a water bottle as a base and (optionally) a bowl as an add-on, as long as you keep it clean. Whatever you choose, check daily that your degus are drinking well.

What should you look for in degu drinking bottles?

Pay attention to the material (glass is often the most gnawing-proof), stable mounting (with a holder or secure attachment), and placement (not in the sand or puddle area). Degus like to gnaw: keep plastic parts within gnawing range and always provide plenty of gnawing material .

Types & holders: useful in practice

Glass bottles are hygienic and often the most durable for rodents. Plastic bottles can work well if you place them wisely and check them regularly. With an (aluminum) water bottle holder, you can create a permanent, tidy drinking area. Want a complete feeding/drinking zone? Combine it with Degoe hay racks and Degoe food bowls .

Checklist

For degus, preferably choose a glass drinking bottle (gnaw-proof and hygienic).
Place bottles stably with a holder, such as the aluminum drinking bottle holder .
Place water bowls in a dry place (not in sand/bedding).
Check daily whether the child is drinking well and whether the spout is working properly.
Prevent boredom: add gnawing material and foraging .

Maintenance

Refresh water daily and clean bottle/bowl regularly (hygiene).
Check the spout for flow and leakage (especially with new bottles).
Clean holders and fasteners weekly and check for wear.

FAQ

Is a water bowl or drinking bottle better for degus?
A bowl is natural, but it gets dirty faster. A water bottle is often more practical and stays clean longer in many enclosures. Many owners use a water bottle as a base and (optionally) a bowl as an add-on.

Why is glass often the best choice?
Degus love to gnaw. Glass is hygienic, durable, and usually less interesting to gnaw on than plastic.

How do I prevent chewing on the water bottle?
Place plastic out of reach as much as possible, use a sturdy holder and always offer plenty of gnawing material .
