Product description

Trixie Ceramic Food Bowl 13 cm

The Trixie Ceramic Food Bowl 13 cm is a sturdy food and water bowl for gerbils, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus. Due to its larger size and capacity of approximately 400 ml, this bowl is particularly useful for animals that need a bit more space when eating or drinking. For gerbils, a more spacious bowl can also be pleasant, as gerbils are social animals and usually live together.

The bowl is made of glazed ceramic, has a rounded rim, and is dishwasher safe. The rounded rim helps to keep food better contained, while the weight of the ceramic ensures that the bowl stands firmly. You can use it for kibble, pellets, herbs, vegetables, snacks, or as a water bowl.

Why choose a ceramic food bowl?

A food bowl provides your pet with a designated spot where food is offered. This is clear for you and recognizable for your pet. You can better see how much has been eaten, remove leftovers more easily, and keep the food better separated from bedding, droppings, or sand.

Ceramic is a practical material for food and water bowls. It is smooth, sturdy, and easy to clean. Thanks to the glaze, moisture penetrates the material less quickly, allowing you to clean the bowl thoroughly. This is especially nice when using the bowl for fresh vegetables, water, or food that tends to leave residue.

This 13 cm size is more spacious than small hamster bowls. As a result, it is a better fit for animals such as gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, chinchillas, and degus. For gerbils, the larger size is particularly useful because they usually live together and sometimes want to get to the food at the same time.

For which animals is the Trixie Ceramic Food Bowl 13 cm suitable?

  • Gerbil: suitable as a sturdy food bowl for food, herbs, or snacks. Because gerbils are social animals and usually live together, a slightly larger bowl can be handy so that multiple animals can access the food at the same time. Preferably place the bowl on a platform or stable spot, as gerbils actively dig and could otherwise undermine the bowls.
  • Rat: suitable as a food bowl for pellets, vegetables, or snack times. For a group of rats, this larger size can be convenient, as multiple animals can access the food more easily at the same time.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a bowl for kibble, pellets, herbs, or vegetables. Thanks to the ceramic, the bowl stands firmly and is easy to clean.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a food bowl for pellets, herbs, or small portions of vegetables. This size can also be used for water, but with multiple rabbits, a larger water bowl is sometimes more practical.
  • Chinchilla: suitable as a food bowl for pellets, herbs, or suitable snacks. Place the bowl in a dry and stable location so that no sand or bedding ends up in it.
  • Degu: suitable as a food bowl for pellets, herbs, or matching snacks. Place the bowl stably and check regularly to ensure it remains clean.

For mice, dwarf hamsters, and hamsters, this bowl is usually too large as a standard food bowl. For these animals, it is better to choose a smaller food bowl that suits their size and portions. For ferrets, this bowl is not intended as the main food bowl; instead, choose a food bowl that suits their eating habits and the amount of food.

Use as a food bowl

Use the bowl for the daily amount of food suitable for your animal. Place it in a fixed spot in the enclosure so your animal knows where to find the food. A fixed feeding spot makes it easier for you to check how much has been eaten and whether any leftovers are left behind.

For gerbils, the bowl can be convenient when you have multiple animals together. It allows them to reach the food more easily at the same time. However, place the bowl firmly, for example on a platform, flat stone, or other stable spot, so that it is not undermined while digging.

For guinea pigs and rabbits, this bowl is suitable for kibble, pellets, herbs, or a small portion of vegetables, in addition to unlimited hay. For rats, the bowl can be useful for group feeding or fresh vegetables. For chinchillas and degus, it is preferably used for dry food, herbs, or suitable snacks.

Remove old or damp food scraps in time. Fresh vegetables or wet food, in particular, should not be left lying around for too long.

Use as a water bowl

You can also use the Trixie Ceramic Food Bowl 13 cm as a water bowl. In that case, pay close attention to hygiene. Water in an open bowl can become contaminated more quickly by bedding, hay, food remnants, or paws. Therefore, change the water at least daily, and more often when it is visibly dirty.

For guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, chinchillas, and degus, a ceramic water bowl can be convenient, as some animals prefer drinking from a bowl rather than a bottle. For gerbils, a water bowl can fill up with bedding more quickly due to their digging behavior; therefore, a water bottle is often more practical as a permanent drinking facility for gerbils.

Do you use both a water bowl and a drinking bottle? Then you can clearly see which drinking method your animal prefers.

Ceramic: sturdy, smooth and easy to clean

Ceramic is a great material for food and water bowls because it feels sturdy and is easy to clean. The glazed layer ensures a smooth surface, making it easy to remove food residue, stains, or light soiling.

The container is dishwasher safe. Preferably rinse away any food residue or water stains before placing the container in the dishwasher. After cleaning, check that the container is intact and free of damage, cracks, or sharp edges.

Ceramic may exhibit minor imperfections. This is inherent to this type of material and the finish. As long as the bowl is smooth, intact, and safe to use, it does not affect its function.

Usage & placement

Place the tray on a flat, stable surface. Preferably, do not place it directly under a water bottle, in a litter corner, or in an area where a lot of bedding is dug up. For burrowing animals such as gerbils, a platform or flat tile can help place the tray more stably.

If you use the bowl for water, place it so that your animal can easily access it without having to step into it. If you use the bowl for food, fill it with an appropriate amount and check for leftovers daily.

Check the container regularly for wear, cracks, or sharp edges. Replace the container when it becomes damaged.
