Hammocks for rodents such as mice, hamsters, gerbils, rats, chinchillas, degu and (some) rabbits

You can easily and quickly buy hammocks for rodents at DRD Rodent Shop ®

A hammock is a wonderful extra resting spot for many animals: warm, cozy, and just a little bit different from a house on the ground. Rats especially love hammocks, but mice, chinchillas, and degus also enjoy using them as a relaxing spot. For guinea pigs and rabbits, there are also comfortable (low-placed) versions, especially if you want to add a soft place to lie down.

Important: Hammocks are intended as additional resting places. Always combine them with a safe hiding place on the ground, such as houses and possibly tunnels .

Warm & cozy
Many models have a soft (warmer) side for extra comfort.
Extra rest area
Ideal as a “hanging bed”, sleeping bag or hanging house.
Species-oriented selection
Particularly suitable for climbers; for ground dwellers we recommend a low placement.
Easy to maintain
Many hammocks are (partly) washable – always check the label.

Start here (popular choices)

Hammock (open)
Airy and uncluttered – ideal as an extra place to lie down.
Sleeping bag / hanging bag
Extra cozy: animals love to snuggle up in it.
Hanging house / cube
More sheltered, often popular as a permanent “sleeping place”.

Which animals are hammocks suitable for?

Hammocks are especially popular with animals that like to climb or rest in elevated places. To make things easier, you can also shop by animal species:

Be careful with hamsters/gerbils: they are not "hangers." Some animals may nibble fabric or pull threads loose. If you still want to try a hammock, hang it low , choose a sturdy model, and check it frequently for wear and tear.

Checklist: How to choose the right hammock

  • Size: Your pet should be able to lie comfortably in/on it without feeling cramped.
  • Type: open hammock (airy) or sleeping bag/hanging house (more sheltered and warm).
  • Suspension points: does it fit your cage/run? (4 points are often more stable than 2)
  • Material & gnawing behaviour: for nibblers, you'll want to choose extra sturdy materials and check more often.
  • Washability: Check label/washing advice for hygiene and longer life.

Use & Hanging (Practical Tips)

  • Hang low: this prevents hard falls and keeps getting in easy.
  • Hang stable: tight enough that it doesn't "sway," but with a natural, soft hang.
  • Combine cleverly: hang above a soft surface (ground cover) or above a plateau.
  • Change/wash regularly: a clean hanging space gets used more quickly and stays fresher.

Tip for chewy friends: If you notice your pet nibbling on fabric items, offer them additional chewing material (such as gnawing wood or chew toys). This can help control their urge to chew.

Safety

  • Check for fraying/threads: replace immediately if worn.
  • Use rodent-proof suspension where possible: metal chain/clip is often more practical than plastic.
  • Don't hang too high: avoid jumps/risk of falling, especially with heavier animals.
  • Be careful with "nibblers": if your animal starts eating fabric or pulling out a lot of threads, it's best to choose a different resting place.
  • Wash according to label: washing too hot may weaken fabric/seam.

FAQ Hammocks

Why do rats love hammocks so much?
Rats like to climb and seek warm, sheltered resting places. A hammock or hanging house is perfect for this.

Are hammocks also suitable for guinea pigs and rabbits?
Yes, especially if you place the hammock low and choose a stable, comfortable option. Not every animal uses them, but many appreciate a soft extra place to lie down.

My pet nibbles on the hammock: what now?
Check for damage and offer additional gnawing material. If the nibbling continues or threads come loose, choose an alternative.

How often should I wash a hammock?
That depends on usage. As a guideline: check regularly and wash as soon as it becomes less fresh or visibly soiled (according to the care label).
