When placed on the floor, the Sputnik works as a regular plastic house. This also makes it suitable for hamsters that prefer to stay closer to the bedding. For hamsters, the Sputnik is mainly an extra open hideout; a more enclosed nesting house with enough nesting material is usually still the most comfortable base as a fixed sleeping spot.

A major advantage of plastic is that it is easy to clean. Mice, dwarf rats and rats regularly mark their enclosure, which means houses and platforms can become dirty more quickly. Which animals is the Savic Sputnik XL suitable for?

• Mouse: very suitable as a hanging house or raised sleeping spot. Because mice are social animals and should be kept together with their own kind, the XL size is pleasant for several mice at the same time.
• Dwarf hamster: suitable as a spacious open hideout when the Sputnik is placed low and stable on the floor. For a fixed nesting spot, many dwarf hamsters prefer a more enclosed house with nesting material.
• Hamster: suitable as an extra open hideout or additional house on the floor of the enclosure. For a Syrian hamster, the spacious XL size is more practical than the smaller version.
• Dwarf rat: very suitable as a hanging house, sleeping spot and climbing target. Dwarf rats can vary in size, but the XL size is generally practical as a spacious resting place.
• Rat: very suitable as a hanging rat house and shared sleeping place. Rats often enjoy using the Sputnik as a higher resting spot, especially when it is easy to reach via platforms, bars or other routes.

For gerbils, we do not recommend the Sputnik as a first choice, because gerbils are strong chewers and destroyers and plastic usually does not match their natural chewing behaviour very well. For guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas and degus, this house is not the best match in terms of shape, size, material or use. For these animals, choose houses and tunnels that better suit their body size, chewing behaviour and way of moving.

Use it hanging or standing

The Savic Sputnik XL can be hung from the cage bars. This makes it especially fun for animals that like to climb, such as mice, dwarf rats and rats. When hanging the Sputnik, always make sure it is easy to reach: your animal should be able to get in and out comfortably. A platform, sturdy climbing route or nearby cage bars often make it easier and more pleasant to use.

The Sputnik can also be placed on the floor of the enclosure. This is especially practical for hamsters or when you want to use it as an extra open hideout. Place it securely and, if desired, add bedding, nesting material or a quiet corner around it, so your animal can decide how it wants to use the house.

For rats and dwarf rats, several resting places can be combined. Think of a Sputnik, hammock, tunnel and platform. This creates a cage with different routes and sleeping spots, which is much more pleasant for social and active animals than having only one hideout.
