Rodent Inspiration
Inspiration & basic furnishings – how to really set up your stay well
Want to create a safe , logically structured enclosure that's also fun and challenging for your pet? In this inspiration section, you'll find sample designs for each species (with explanations, a checklist, and a quick shopping list). This way, you don't have to guess through hundreds of products, but can choose precisely what suits your rodent or rabbit's behavior.
DRD Rodent Shop® has been a specialist since 2011. This is reflected in the choices we make: no "random collection," but a well-thought-out foundation that gives you a good start.
Every basic structure is built around behavior: digging, gnawing, climbing, sheltering, foraging, and resting.
You'll see which products we use and why. At the bottom of the pages, you can easily select what you need.
Unsure about size, layout, or combinations? Send us your measurements or a photo—and we'll help you make the right choice.
How does an inspiration page work?
Each inspiration page features a single design (the "setup"), with a clear explanation: what's the goal , what behaviors are you encouraging , and what to consider when choosing . You'll then find the products used in the setup, so you can quickly order—without the stress of choosing.
Basic layout per animal species

- Basic Dwarf Hamster Setup

- Basic Guinea Pig Furnishings
- Basic Rabbit Furnishings

Tip: Make each basic setup a "starting point" in your species categories (e.g., Mouse, Hamster, Guinea Pig). This strengthens internal linking and helps beginners get off to a good start.
Themes & specials
Besides the basics, you'll also find creative and seasonal arrangements. Think enrichment, variety, and something a little different—without losing sight of the practical foundation.
Quick checklist: this is your minimum base
- Substrate/ground covering appropriate to the behaviour (digging, absorption, comfort).
- Shelter(s) : at least one safe resting place per animal (and additional for group animals).
- Food and drink supply that is stable and easy to clean.
- Enrichment : gnawing material, foraging challenge and/or climbing and walking routes (depending on species).
- Hygiene plan : spot clean + periodic maintenance, without stripping everything bare at once.
Safety & common mistakes
- Choose a setting that suits the animal species (solitary vs. group, digger vs. climber).
- Ensure stable placement: always balance heavy items securely and not "on" loose ground covering.
- Keep it clear: a strong base with good zones is better than too many separate stimuli without a function.
- Unsure about a combination? Ask us—it prevents bad purchases.
