Gerbil gnawing material – gnawing wood, roots & natural gnawing stones (safe and unsweetened)
Gerbils are true rodents . This isn't "naughty," but a basic need: gnawing is part of their natural behavior and helps them stay occupied. That's why you'll find safe gnawing wood (such as willow, apple, and hazel) in this category, supplemented with natural gnawing products like carrots and unsweetened gnawing stones (e.g., clay). This way, you can direct their gnawing behavior to the right places in the enclosure, using materials suitable for gerbils.
At DRD Rodent Shop® , we select rodent materials based on practicality: natural, safe, free of "snack tricks," and easily combined with enrichment. We've been specializing in rodents and rabbits since 2011 .
Gerbils gnaw throughout the day, so make sure there's always safe wood available.
View gnawing wood →
Vary the textures (branch, bark, root, mix). This makes gnawing more interesting and prevents "boredom gnawing."
Enrichment & foraging →
Choose gnawing products without honey, sugar, or "candy coatings." Gnawing materials aren't a snack, they're an activity.

Gerbil gnawing material – quick selection guide
Want to keep it simple? Start with one base (gnawing wood) and then add variety. In this category, you'll find gnawing boxes and branches like Apple Branches , and sets like the Gnawing Box . (Selection changes with the current stock.)
1) Basis: gnawing wood (daily)
- Willow / apple / hazel – ideal as “always-available” gnawing wood.
- Mix with twigs – great for extra scent and texture stimulation.
2) Variation: carrots & natural gnawing products
- Roots (e.g. dandelion root/shrimp-like) – different texture, nice for a change.
- Boxes/sets – handy if you want to test multiple varieties at once.
3) Natural gnawing stones (unsweetened, functional)
- JR Farm Claystone / Loamstone – natural gnawing stone as an extra option (not a candy stone).
Tip : Offer several pieces of gnawing wood in different locations (near tunnels, on a platform, and near the feeding area). This naturally encourages gnawing behavior.
What is gerbil gnawing material?
Gerbil gnawing material is anything your gerbil can safely use to gnaw: primarily untreated gnawing wood , supplemented with natural materials like roots or an unsweetened loam/clay gnawing stone. Rodents' incisors grow continuously; gnawing helps support this natural wear.
Rodent wood for gerbils: what should you pay attention to?
- Untreated & clean : choose wood intended for animals (no varnished/painted wood).
- Difference in thickness : thin branches + thicker pieces gives more variety.
- Replace if wet/sticky : Wet wood can become dirty or moldy more quickly.
- Don't just take it out of the garden yourself : you don't know what has been on it (pesticide/traffic/parasites).
Safe gnawing stones: which ones are suitable for gerbils?
Do you want to offer a gnawing stone in addition to wood? Choose a natural, unsweetened variety (like loam/clay) and avoid "candy stones" made with honey or sugar. The goal is functional gnawing , not extra sugar intake.
How to offer gnawing material smartly
- Spread out the offer : place wood in several places to encourage walking and searching behaviour.
- Combine with digging : partially bury a branch in the substrate; gerbils will happily “work” it loose.
- Make it part of the decor : combine with tunnels and houses for a “castle feeling”.
Checklist – gerbil gnawing material in practice
✔ Always untreated gnawing wood available.
✔ Vary in type and thickness (twigs + thicker pieces).
✔ Choose gnawing products without sugar/honey .
✔ Replace wet/contaminated material in a timely manner.
✔ Combine gnawing with enrichment (hiding, spreading, tunnels).
Safety
Check gnawing materials regularly for sharp splinters, heavy soiling, or mold (especially if they've gotten wet). If you notice your gerbil struggling to eat, drooling noticeably, or losing significant weight, contact a veterinarian.
FAQ – gerbil gnawing material
What is the best gnawing material for gerbils?
Basically: safe, untreated gnawing wood (e.g., willow, apple, or hazel) that's always available. Supplement with variety, such as carrots or unsweetened clay.
Do gerbils need a mineral block?
Gerbils generally prefer gnawing wood and natural variety . If you do want to offer a stone, choose an unsweetened , functional variety (not a "treat stone").
My gerbil mainly chews on furnishings, what can I do?
Offer more (and a more varied) gnawing material throughout the enclosure. Combine this with tunnels, thick bedding, and foraging challenges to make gnawing a "task."
✔ Especially gnawing wood: safe, natural and always available
✔ Variation with carrots & unsweetened gnawing stones
