What are fresh rabbit herbs?

Fresh rabbit herbs are living herbs and plants that are suitable for (judiciously) supplemental feeding. Think of plants like plantain, dandelion, lemon balm, thyme, chamomile, spider plant, and cat grass. You can offer them as individual tufts or, depending on your accommodation, temporarily place them as "snack plants" so your rabbit can nibble on them.

How do you give fresh herbs?

Start small and build up slowly: every rabbit reacts differently.
Preferably give as a supplement to hay and rabbit food .
Alternate types for variation in scent, taste and texture.
Make it fun: hide small tufts in a foraging area or among hay.

Seasonal availability

Fresh herbs are often (partly) seasonal . Not every plant is equally strong or available year-round. When fresh herbs are available, they are offered as fresh as possible and come from growers who cultivate them for human consumption.

Checklist – how to add fresh herbs smartly

The basis remains: unlimited hay + measured rabbit food .
Start with a small piece and observe.
Rotate species; make it a foraging moment.
If desired, combine with dried herbs for extra variety.

Safety

Always introduce fresh herbs gradually. Remove any plants or leaf debris that gets wet or ends up in the litter box. Don't give plants whose origin or suitability you're unsure of. If you have any doubts about appetite, behavior, or stool quality, contact a veterinarian.

FAQ

Are fresh herbs better than dried herbs?
They're mainly different: fresh offers a different aroma and experience. Dried is easy to measure and keeps longer. Alternating often works best.

How often can I give fresh herbs?
That depends on your rabbit and the rest of the diet. Start small, build up gradually, and keep it supplementary.

What is always the most important on the menu?
Unlimited hay , supplemented with suitable rabbit food and clean drinking water.
