The botanical name Chlorophytum is derived from the Greek terms chloros = yellowish green and phyton = plant. The green lily is not only a beautiful houseplant, but also popular with cats and rodents because of its sturdy, but still not sharp-edged leaves. Even birds and terrarium inhabitants like to nibble on the plant. Presumably the high water content of the leaves contributes to its popularity: the leaves serve as storage organs for water. With this trick, this plant also easily survives 'thirsty days'. So you don't need a green thumb for this plant!
Incidentally, Chlorophytum is one of the few plant species that can filter pollutants from the ambient air. This also means that the plant should not be kept in rooms containing nicotine if it is also given as food for rodents.

The heart of the hamster scaper will now beat faster, because a fresh plant in the enclosure is of course the ultimate natural decoration of the hamster scaping enclosure . We can actually do this in all directions depending on the ground cover. If you use a "soil"-like ground cover such as humus , for example, you could choose to plant the plants directly in the ground. The roots will then continue to grow in the soil. This way you have a perennial plant in the enclosure. How quickly the animals eat the plant depends on each rodent species. Mice, Dwarf Hamsters and Hamsters often take it easy with the plants. Gerbils, on the contrary, are more likely to nibble on them.
You can also choose to place the plant in a pot in the enclosure when hamster scaping. An advantage of this is that the plant can be removed more easily from the enclosure to allow it to grow. Watering is best done with a plant sprayer .
The plants are therefore nutritious, healthy and also have a very nice decorative function, but there is something else that we should not forget. The plants promote the natural behavior of rodents. In the wild, rodents are mainly foraging for food and rabbits are actually eating throughout the day. Herbivores (plant-eating animals) have a gastrointestinal system that can only work if new food is constantly being eaten. The new food pushes the old food through the intestines, as it were, which is why it is very important that rabbits have hay available all day long.
In the wild, the animals choose their own food, but a large part of the food consists of fresh plant parts. These are chosen for their fibres, vitamins, minerals, trace elements, proteins, but also for their medicinal effect. Many plants are known for their health-promoting properties. The animals know this better than anyone and in the wild they instinctively look for the right plant for an ailment.
The plants are intended for consumption by rodents, not as ornamental plants for the home. Some plant knowledge is required to keep the plants alive and beautiful.
The plants can be eaten by all rodents and rabbits.
Chinchillas and Degus preferably only in dried form. Pick the leaves off the plant, let them dry for a day and then give them to the Chinchilla or Degu. An exception to this is the Thyme plant , which is quite dry in itself, so that it can be fed per small twig to Chinchillas and Degus.

De plant is vrij groot om in het verblijf te zetten maar mijn dwerghamster is er blij mee, hij knabbelt er vaak aan
Mijn caafjes vinden t super lekker

Staat heel leuk in onze stellingkast!
