The color mouse is a small granivorous (seed-eating) mammal and belongs to the order of rodents. They are mainly active at night (but are adaptable), highly social and live in groups consisting of related family members. They have a life expectancy of 2 to 3 years and reach a body length of 6.5 to 9.5 cm and a body weight of 20 to 40 g.
The colored mouse originally comes from west-central Asia and northern India. There it lives in steppe areas and semi-deserts and builds its nests in self-dug holes or in crevices between stones. Nowadays the colored mouse can be found all over the world and likes to feed on agricultural grains.
Like all small mammals, the colored mouse has its own nutritional needs. Mice like a varied diet. To supplement their diet, mice can have small portions of fresh fruit and vegetables. Always let the mice slowly get used to a new type of fruit or vegetable. Of course, mice must always have fresh and clean drinking water available.
The Incisors
The incisors continue to grow for life, so the food must provide the necessary tooth wear. Hardness, size and type of feed particles are important. They must therefore be given sufficient opportunity to wear down their teeth. They do this by peeling seeds and gnawing on larger food components. In addition, mice must always have gnawing material available.
The stomach
The stomach consists of one chamber and is separated by a mucous membrane into a part without a gland and a part with a gland.
Small appendix
Colored mice have a small appendix. That is why they need easily digestible carbohydrates and an energy-rich diet. The crude fiber content in mouse food should be about 7%.
Animal proteins
A complete mouse food should contain 12-14% protein. Granivorous (seed-eating) animals need animal protein. The valuable amino acids are important for cell renewal and various metabolic processes. Mice can get animal proteins from insects, meat or cheese.
High energy needs
Mice have a fast metabolism and therefore an increased energy requirement. Mice eat up to 200 small portions per day! Therefore, there must be unlimited food available.
Fat
A good mouse food contains no more than 5% oil and fat. Foods rich in fat and sugar should be limited. An example of this is nuts. These can be offered as a snack.
Calcium
The calcium-phosphorus ratio should be 1.1-1.5:1. Calcium is important for bones and teeth.
