Product description

Hamster & Co Foraging Menu – popular natural foraging mix for hamsters

The Hamster & Co Foraging Menu is one of our most popular food mixes for hamsters. This rich, natural mix is formulated for owners who want to give their hamster not only a tasty treat, but also a true search-and-discover menu. Thanks to the combination of grains, seeds, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and animal protein sources, every feeding is varied and interesting.

At DRD, when it comes to hamster food, we focus primarily on variety, texture, acceptance, and natural behavior. Hamsters are active collectors and foragers: they search, sort, hoard, and enjoy taking their food to safe spots. This foraging menu aligns perfectly with that. You can place a portion in the food bowl and scatter the rest throughout the enclosure, ensuring your hamster truly has something to do.

The Rodent Grocer

The Rodent Herbalist®

This foraging menu complements De Knaagdier Kruidenier®: the premium private label of DRD Knaagdierwinkel® featuring natural herbs, flowers, leaves, mixes, and enrichment carefully selected for rodents and rabbits. We choose such mixes because they are not only tasty but also help stimulate natural behaviors such as searching, sniffing, and foraging.

Why choose Forage Menu Hamster?

A hamster doesn't just eat to get “full.” A large part of the fun lies in searching, collecting, and hoarding. That is precisely why a varied mix is so valuable: your hamster can find small pieces, take them along, sort them, and eat them at different times. This makes eating more natural and enjoyable.

This mix contains, among other things, red sorghum, yellow peas, barley, millet, dari, rice, seeds, pumpkin seeds, mealworms, vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, and nuts. As a result, you get a wide variety in scent, size, hardness, and texture. This makes the foraging menu very suitable not only for feeding in a bowl but also for use as enrichment in the enclosure.

For which animals is this foraging menu suitable?

  • Dwarf hamster: suitable as a rich forage mix in small, easily controlled portions. Due to the variety with fruit, nuts, and seeds, it is wise not to overfeed and to check the food stash regularly.
  • Hamster: very suitable as a natural foraging mix for adult hamsters, especially when you want to combine eating with searching, hoarding, and exploring.
  • Gerbil: can also be interesting as a varied forage mix for gerbils, provided you adjust the portion properly and observe what is actually eaten.
  • Mouse: can be offered in small portions as a varied search mix, especially when you want to use it to stimulate foraging.
  • Rat: can be used as a varied forage or snack mix alongside suitable rat food. For rats, it is therefore preferable to use this as enrichment, not as the sole daily basis.

This mix is not suitable as a base for guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, because they are herbivores and require a completely different, fiber-rich diet.

How do you use the Foraging Menu?

You can offer the foraging menu in various ways. The best approach is to combine food and enrichment. For example, place a portion in the food bowl to maintain an overview, and scatter a small portion throughout the enclosure so your hamster can search for it.

  • Give an appropriate portion and check what is eaten.
  • Scatter a small amount through the bedding to encourage natural foraging behavior.
  • Hide small amounts in a tunnel, cork tube, sniffing spot, or among safe nesting material.
  • Check the pantry regularly and remove old or fresh leftovers in time.
  • Combine with sufficient ground cover, hiding places, and foraging opportunities.

How much do you give per day?

The correct amount depends on the species, age, activity level, build, and what else you feed. For an adult hamster, you can start with a small daily portion and then carefully monitor the feeding area and food storage. If a lot is left over, give slightly less. If everything is eaten quickly and your hamster remains in good condition, you can adjust the portion accordingly.

For young hamsters, dwarf hamsters, or animals with specific nutritional needs, a more species-specific basic diet or extra animal protein supplementation may sometimes be more logical. In that case, use the foraging menu consciously and pay close attention to what your animal needs.

Foraging: how to make eating more fun

This foraging menu comes into its own particularly well in a natural hamster setup. By distributing the mix in small portions, you turn eating into an activity. Your hamster has to smell, search, dig, and choose. This fits well with hamsterscaping, where the enclosure is not only beautiful but, above all, supports behavior.

  • Sprinkle a small portion between a clean layer of bedding.
  • Use a cork tunnel, grapevine, vine, or safe hiding place as a search zone.
  • Hide small bits in a foraging toy.
  • Don't put everything in one place, but create several small searching moments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Foraging Menu suitable for hamsters?

Yes, this foraging menu is particularly popular among hamster owners who like to offer a natural, varied mix. Due to the different textures, it is very suitable for stimulating foraging behavior and hoarding.

Can I scatter this food through the bedding?

Yes, that is actually a great way to use it. Sprinkle small amounts on clean spots in the enclosure so your hamster can search and collect. Additionally, always keep an eye on how much is being eaten.

Is this suitable for dwarf hamsters?

Yes, but it is better to give dwarf hamsters small portions and check the pantry carefully. The mix is rich and varied, containing fruit, nuts, and seeds, among other things. Therefore, careful dosing is important.

Why are there mealworms and silkworms in it?

Hamsters are not strictly herbivores. Animal proteins are part of their natural diet. Mealworms and silkworms therefore make the mix particularly interesting and provide variety in protein sources.

Can I also give this to rats?

For rats, you can use this as a varied forage or snack mix alongside suitable rat food. Therefore, for rats, this is primarily interesting as enrichment, not as the sole daily basis.

How do I best store this mix?

Store the mix in a cool, dry, and tightly sealed place. This will keep the ingredients crunchy, fresh, and appealing to feed.
