Product description

Trixie Glass Drinking Bottle for Rodents and Rabbits

The Trixie Glass Drinking Bottle is a sturdy, hygienic drinking bottle for rodents, rabbits, and ferrets. Because the bottle is made of glass and the drinking spout is metal, this bottle is a great choice for animals that like to gnaw on plastic parts. Think, for example, of gerbils, chinchillas, and degus, but also other animals for which you want a durable and easy-to-clean drinking solution.

The drinking bottle is available in 125 ml, 250 ml, and 500 ml. Thanks to the float, you can quickly check the water level, and the ball mechanism ensures the bottle dispenses water in a controlled manner when your animal presses against the ball. The metal suspension system with spring tension, groove, and wire bracket allows you to securely attach the bottle to the bars.

Pros of the Trixie Glass Drinking Bottle

Glass bottle: hygienic, sturdy, and easy to clean.
Metal drinking spout: practical for animals that quickly gnaw through plastic parts.
Clear water level: the float clearly shows how much water is left in the bottle.
Secure to hang: with tension spring, groove, and wire bracket for attachment to bars.
In three sizes: choose 125 ml, 250 ml, or 500 ml to suit your animal and enclosure.

Why choose a glass water bottle?

A glass water bottle is particularly pleasant when you are looking for a sturdy, hygienic, and chew-resistant drinking solution. Glass does not absorb odors like some materials can, and it is easy to clean. This makes this water bottle convenient for daily use, especially if you want to clean and refill water bottles regularly.

For animals that like to gnaw, glass is often a better choice than plastic. Gerbils, degus, and chinchillas can damage plastic water bottles or plastic parts if they can reach them. With this Trixie water bottle, the bottle and spout are made chew-resistant. However, make sure to hang the bottle in such a way that your animal cannot reach parts that are not meant to be gnawed on.

A water bottle dispenses water in a controlled manner. Your animal must press against the ball in the spout to get water. This works well for many animals, but not every animal drinks the same amount from every bottle. Therefore, always check after hanging it up whether water is coming out of the spout and whether your animal is actually using the bottle.

Which size do you choose?

  • 125 ml: suitable for small animals such as mice, dwarf hamsters, and hamsters, or for enclosures where you prefer to use a small bottle.
  • 250 ml: a nice intermediate size for hamsters, gerbils, rats, chinchillas, and degus, among others.
  • 500 ml: suitable for larger animals or animals that drink more, such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets.

Choose a size that suits your pet, the group size, and how often you change the water. Even with a larger bottle, checking daily and changing the water regularly remains important. The water should stay fresh and the drinking spout must continue to function properly.

For which animals is this drinking bottle suitable?

  • Hamster: suitable as a sturdy drinking bottle. Always check that your hamster can reach the spout properly and drink from it.
  • Gerbil: very practical due to the glass and the metal drinking spout. Hang the bottle so that it remains stable and cannot be pulled off.
  • Rat and pygmy rat: suitable as a drinking bottle. For groups, we recommend multiple drinking points.
  • Guinea pig: suitable as a drinking bottle. Do check if your guinea pig drinks well from a bottle; some guinea pigs prefer drinking from a water bowl.
  • Rabbit: suitable as a water bottle, but many rabbits find it easier to drink from a sturdy water bowl. See what your rabbit prefers to use.
  • Chinchilla: suitable due to the chew-resistant design. Hang the bottle securely and check daily.
  • Degu: suitable due to the glass bottle and metal spout. Degus are strong gnawers, so pay close attention to placement.
  • Ferret: suitable as a drinking bottle if your ferret drinks well from a bottle and the bottle can be securely attached.

How do you use the Trixie Glass Drinking Bottle?

  • Fill the water bottle completely with fresh water.
  • Tighten the cap with the drinking spout securely.
  • Hang the bottle upright and securely from the bars.
  • After hanging it up, tap the ball in the spout a few times.
  • Check with your finger if water comes out of the spout.
  • Observe closely during the first few hours to see if your animal understands the bottle and drinks from it.

If an air bubble remains in the spout, it may seem as though the bottle is not working. Therefore, always tap the ball until you see or feel water coming out. This way, you can be sure that the drinking bottle is dispensing water before your pet needs it.

Why fill the bottle completely?

A water bottle works best when it is properly filled and hung correctly. Therefore, fill the bottle completely with water before hanging it up. With ball-type water bottles, air in the bottle or spout can affect water delivery. By filling the bottle properly and checking the spout after hanging it up, you reduce the risk of your pet being faced with a non-functioning water bottle.

Check the bottle daily. Don't just look at the water level, but also tap the spout to see if water is coming out. This way, you will quickly notice if the spout is clogged, trapping air, or reacting differently than normal.

Drinking bottle or water bowl?

A water bottle is practical because the water is less likely to become contaminated by bedding, hay, or leftover feed. However, not every animal drinks from a bottle equally easily. Young animals, new animals, or animals accustomed to a different type of water bottle may need time to adjust.

For young animals and whenever switching to a new water bottle, it is wise to temporarily place a water bowl as well. This ensures that your animal has access to water while it gets used to the new bottle. Once you are certain that your animal drinks well from the bottle, you can choose what works best in your enclosure.

Multiple animals? Use multiple drinking points

For social animals that live in a group, such as rats, guinea pigs, degus, or some other group animals, it is wise to offer multiple drinking points. A dominant animal may occupy a bottle or block access. With multiple water bottles or a combination of a bottle and a water bowl, you reduce the chance that an animal will have difficulty accessing water.

Position drinking points so that all animals can reach them. Also check that the height of the spout suits your animal's body size and posture. An animal must be able to drink comfortably without having to stretch too far.

Cleaning and maintenance

Clean the water bottle regularly. Rinse the bottle, clean the inside with a bottle brush, and check the spout for dirt, limescale, or blockages. Allow the bottle to dry thoroughly when you are not using it temporarily.

Glass is hygienic, but it can break if it falls. Therefore, check the bottle regularly for cracks, damage, or sharp edges. Do not use a damaged glass drinking bottle. Also check the metal spout, the ball, and the suspension system regularly.

Compound

Good to know

Check daily whether the water bottle dispenses water and whether your animal is actually drinking from it. For young animals, new animals, or when switching to a different water bottle, temporarily place a water bowl as well. The 125 ml and 250 ml sizes fit in the Trixie Natural Living Bottle Holder; the 500 ml size does not. Glass is hygienic and chew-resistant, but it can break if dropped. Do not use the bottle if it is damaged.
