Is a Chinese dwarf hamster male or female? Here's how to tell the sex.
Wondering if your Chinese dwarf hamster is male or female ? It's a common question, especially if your hamster is still young. The good news: in adult animals, the difference is often quite clear. With a male, you'll usually see visible testicles , and the difference in distance between the openings is greater. On this page, we explain step by step how to safely and calmly check, what to look for, and what to do if you're unsure. DRD Rodent Shop® has been a specialist since 2011 .

Quick Checklist: Determining Gender (Safe & Calm)
- ✓ Choose a quiet moment (your hamster is awake, not just eaten/busy running).
- ✓ Work low over a soft surface (towel/bed).
- ✓ Preferably use a transparent container or let your hamster walk over your hand.
- ✓ Look at the distance between the anus and the genitals + in males, often visible testicles .
- ✓ Not sure? Ask your breeder or contact us through our service page .
✓ Male
Often more clearly recognisable: larger distance between the openings and (certainly in adult animals) visible balls.
✓ Female
The openings are closer together. When you look carefully (in good light), you'll usually see a smaller "intermediate section."
✓ When in doubt
With young animals, it's more difficult. It's best to have it confirmed by an experienced breeder or send us a message via the service page.
Why knowing the gender is useful
Knowing the sex is especially practical: it prevents misunderstandings, allows you to better assess what you have, and prevents unwanted situations. Even if you only have "one hamster," it's good to know for sure (for example, for naming, health checks, and personalized advice). And very importantly: if you ever contact a breeder or shelter, the sex is usually one of the first questions they ask.
This is how you watch safely (without putting unnecessary strain on your hamster)
The easiest method is to look into a transparent container (like a small plastic box) so you can briefly peek at the bottom without turning your hamster onto its back. You can also let your hamster walk over your hand and peek along at the right moment.
- Quiet moment: choose a moment when your hamster is awake and not very startled.
- Safe place: work low above a towel/bed (if your hamster gets scared, the trap will be small).
- Short glances: keep it to 5–10 seconds. It's better to try several short glances than one long one.
- Reward: give a small snack afterwards or let your hamster return to its enclosure in peace.
Tip: Use a transport crate as a viewing container. This is especially handy for a quiet move or a vet visit.
Characteristics: Chinese dwarf hamster male
With a male, there are two points that usually help you the fastest:
- Visible testicles: These are often clearly visible, especially in adult males. They can be particularly noticeable during periods of warmth or relaxation.
- Greater distance between anus and genital opening: there is more “space” between the openings than in a female.
Note: In young animals, the testicles aren't always clearly visible. In those cases, the distance between the openings is often a more reliable marker (though still subtle).
Characteristics: Chinese dwarf hamster female
In a female you usually see:
- Openings closer together: the genital opening and anus are more clearly “compact” together.
- No visible testicles: obviously, you don't see any testicles like you do with a male.
Tip for careful viewing: make sure there's enough light (for example, daylight near a window). Often, the difference only becomes truly apparent when you compare them carefully: "How big is the gap between the openings?"
In young animals: when do you see it clearly?
With young Chinese dwarf hamsters, determining their sex can be more difficult because their characteristics are still developing. As your hamster ages, it usually becomes clearer in males, as their testicles become more visible. If you're unsure, it's wise to have an experienced breeder confirm the sex.

FAQ – Chinese dwarf hamster male or female
When can you clearly see the testicles in a male?
This varies by age and time of year. It's often more obvious in adults. In young hamsters, it can still be subtle.
I can't see it well. What can I do?
Try looking in good light with a clear container and keep it very brief. Still having trouble? Contact us via our service page .
Should I lay my hamster on its back?
Preferably not. That's nerve-racking for many hamsters. A quick check in a clear container is usually calmer and safer.
