Why choose the Savic Sputnik XL?

The Sputnik XL is popular because it is very practical. You can hang it from the bars, utilizing extra vertical space. This is especially handy in rat cages and mouse enclosures, where animals like to climb and use multiple routes through the cage. If you hang it lower, it can also serve as a convenient resting place. If you place it on the bottom, it functions as a regular plastic house.

A major advantage of plastic is that it is easy to clean. Mice, pygmy rats, and rats regularly mark their enclosures, which means houses and platforms can get dirty more quickly. A plastic house is easier to wipe down than many wooden or fabric materials. This makes the Sputnik particularly useful as a permanent part of a cage that is cleaned regularly.

For which animals is the Savic Sputnik XL suitable?

• Mouse: very suitable as a hanging house or elevated sleeping place. Because mice are social animals and should be kept with other mice of their kind, the XL size is nice for multiple mice at the same time.
• Dwarf hamster: possible as a spacious open house if placed low and stable. However, the Sputnik is quite open for dwarf hamsters; a more enclosed house with a nesting chamber is often a better fit as a permanent sleeping place.
• Hamster: suitable as an open hiding place or extra house, especially when used on the floor. For hamsters, a closed house with sufficient nesting material usually remains the most important base.
• Dwarf ridge: very suitable as a hangout, sleeping place, and climbing target. Dwarf ridges can vary in size, but the XL size is generally practical as a spacious resting place.
• Rat: very suitable as a hanging rat house and group sleeping place. Rats often enjoy using the Sputnik as a high resting place, especially when it is logically accessible via platforms, bars, or other routes.

We do not recommend the Sputnik for gerbils, as gerbils are real destroyers and gnawers, and plastic is usually not a logical choice. For guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and degus, this house is not the best match in terms of shape, size, material, or use. For these animals, it is better to choose houses and tunnels that suit their body size, gnawing behavior, and movement patterns.

Use hanging or standing

You can hang the Savic Sputnik XL from the bars of the cage. This makes it extra fun for animals that like to climb, such as mice, pygmy rats, and rats. When hanging it, always pay attention to accessibility: your animal must be able to get in and out safely. A platform, sturdy route, or bar climbing route nearby often makes use more pleasant.

You can also place the Sputnik on the bottom of the enclosure. This is especially useful for hamsters or when you want to use it as an extra open hiding place. Place it down stably and optionally supplement the surroundings with bedding, nesting material, or a quiet corner, so that your animal can choose how to use the house.

For rats and pygmy rats, you can combine multiple resting places. Think of a Sputnik, hammock, tunnel, and platform. This creates a cage with various routes and sleeping spots, which is much more pleasant for social and active animals than a single hiding place.
