Rat pellets – 100% natural pressed pellets of herbs, vegetables, seeds and fruit
Looking for a small, pure reward or something to make feeding a little more interesting? Then rat pellets are a great addition. In this category, you'll find 100% natural pressed pellets made with dried ingredients such as herbs (e.g., nettle, basil, dill), vegetables (e.g., bell pepper, beetroot), seeds (e.g., linseed, hemp), and fruit (e.g., apple).
The idea is simple: one (or a few) dried ingredients are pressed into a convenient pellet, without any unnecessary additives. Perfect for portioning, hiding, and using as forage enrichment. DRD Rodent Shop ® – Specialists in rodents and rabbits since 2011.
Hide pellets in the enclosure or use them in a sniffing area. This makes eating an activity, not just "emptying the bowl."

Choosing rat pellets – quick selection guide
Think of pellets as enrichment and reward . Choose primarily based on your goal : do you want something spicy for variety, something vegetable-like for a change, or perhaps fruit/seed as a "high-value" treat?
1) Herbal pellets (popular for variety)
- Examples: nettle, basil, dill, green oats, sainfoin, peppermint, dandelion, parsley.
- Great as a “daily enrichment”: small, dry, easy to hide.
2) Vegetable pellets (variation in taste and texture)
- Examples: bell pepper, beetroot.
- Handy if you like to reward without giving “a lot” right away.
3) Fruit & seed pellets (extra attractive, so use in moderation)
- Examples: apple (fruit), linseed, and hemp (seed).
- Use this primarily as a training treat or “search game reward”: a small amount, a big effect.
✔ Tip: alternate 2–3 flavors and keep it predictable: pellets are extras, the basis remains your rat food.
What are rat pellets?
Rat pellets in this category are pressed pellets made from dried ingredients. Many varieties are single-ingredient (for example, 100% nettle or 100% apple), allowing you to choose precisely and easily measure out the right amount. Because they're pressed, they're firm, crumble less, and are ideal for hiding.
What types of pellets are popular with pet rats?
- Herbal pellets – great for variety and “something to do” in the enclosure.
- Vegetable pellets – variety in taste and smell, often easy to combine with foraging.
- Fruit pellets – often especially popular; therefore, use them mainly as a reward (in moderation).
- Seed pellets – richer in character; ideal as a high-value treat, especially during training.
How do you use pellets for rats?
- As enrichment: sprinkle a few pellets around the enclosure (not in toilet areas).
- As a reward: useful for contact training or “come on” practice.
- As part of foraging: hide them in a toy, tunnel or sniffing spot.
- As a group: divide into small groups and in several places, so that everyone has a chance.
Pellets + foraging = daily success
Rats love to search and "work" for treats. Pellets are ideal for this: they're small, dry, and easy to hide. Combine this with Ratscaping (more routes/places to search) or create a separate search zone in a digging pit .
Checklist – using rat pellets wisely
✔ Use pellets as an extra (enrichment/reward), not as a complete basis.
✔ Choose 2–3 flavors and alternate; this keeps it fun and manageable.
✔ Fruit and seed pellets: extra attractive, so feed in moderation .
✔ Hide in multiple places: this prevents hassle in a group.
✔ Combine with rat food as a solid base.
Safety
Introduce new flavors slowly and observe how your group reacts. Always provide supplements in measured doses and keep the total daily ration in mind. If you're unsure what suits your rat(s), choose a simple base and use pellets sparingly as enrichment.
FAQ – rat pellets
Are rat pellets the same as rat food?
No. These pellets are intended as a supplement (enrichment/reward). For the base, choose a complete food from Rattenvoer .
How often can I give fruit pellets?
Fruit pellets are often especially popular. So use them primarily as a reward or in a search game: a small amount, a big effect. Always keep it within the total daily allowance.
What is the most fun way to give pellets?
Hide them in foraging toys or scatter them throughout the enclosure. See Play & Foraging for more information.
