Looking for a Syrian hamster house that really fits? Then you've come to the right place with this category of Syrian hamster houses . The Syrian hamster (or golden hamster) is noticeably larger and broader than a dwarf hamster. Because of this, many "standard hamster houses" are often too small or have openings that are too narrow.
At DRD Rodent Shop® , we select houses with logical dimensions, secure finishes, and comfortable entrances – so your hamster can sleep, nest, and empty its cheek pouches without any hassle. We've been specialists since 2011 , so you'll mainly find houses here that we're happy to recommend ourselves.
What size house for a Syrian hamster (golden hamster)?
For a Syrian hamster (golden hamster), we recommend a slightly larger cage than a smaller one. A golden hamster needs to be able to turn around, lie down, empty its cheek pouches, and comfortably build a nest.
- House size: guideline from approx. 20 × 15 cm (larger is often better).
- Height: Enough height so that your hamster doesn't feel "squashed" in the roof.
- Opening(s): Preferably around 6–7 cm (depending on shape and type). Too narrow = less comfortable.
- Multiple entrances: for larger houses or more complex shapes, having 2 entrances is extra convenient.
Tip: Draw out the dimensions (e.g., 20 x 20 x 15 cm). That way, you'll immediately see if it's "golden hamster-worthy."
What types of golden hamster houses can you find here?
In this subcategory you will mainly find houses that are practical for golden hamsters:
- Spacious sleeping/shelter houses (main house, nesting place)
- Multi-room houses (sleeping + pantry + extra space)
- Tunnel/house combinations (route + shelter)
- Sand houses (as a "bath house" in combination with a sand bath)
- Ceramic houses (cooling spot/extra hiding place, especially nice in summer)
Multi-room house for golden hamsters: often the best match
A hamster likes to use different areas: one for sleeping, one for storing supplies, and sometimes a separate corner for toileting. A multi-room house is perfect for this and gives your hamster more control over its own layout.
- ✓ More peace and less disturbance of the nesting site
- ✓ Convenient to check without opening everything
- ✓ Can be beautifully incorporated into hamster scaping

What material is best for a golden hamster house?
The "best" material depends primarily on your décor and how you plan to clean. For your hamster, size, safety, and hiding space are the most important.
Placement in the enclosure: how to make it truly golden hamster-proof
A golden hamster is a real burrower. A house works best when combined with deep, diggable soil.
- An open bottom is often the most convenient: urine can drain away and your hamster can “build in” the house.
- Create a stable location (especially for heavier ceramic or stone houses) and prevent it from tipping over on a deep excavation layer.
- Combine with hamster bedding and nesting material for a sturdy nest.

How do you clean a golden hamster cage?
Primarily local and clever. Leave the nest site alone as much as possible, unless it's really dirty. Avoid submerging wooden nests in water (the wood/glue can come loose or warp).
A practical aid against odors and urine is an enzyme cleaner via: urine spray .
Checklist: choosing a golden hamster home
- ✓ Preferably a size of approx. 20 × 15 cm (wider = finer)
- ✓ Entrances comfortably wide (often ± 6–7 cm)
- ✓ Preferably open bottom for hygiene and "installation"
- ✓ Minimum 2 openings for larger/complex houses
- ✓ Matches your decor (hamsterscaping, theme, practical cleaning)
Safety warnings
- ✓ Avoid openings that are too small (golden hamsters have a broader build).
- ✓ Place heavy houses stably (not loose on a deep excavation layer).
- ✓ Check edges/finish and keep the house dry and fresh.
FAQ – Syrian hamster houses
Is a Syrian hamster bigger than a dwarf hamster?
Yes, clearly. That's why many standard "hamster houses" are actually dwarf hamster-sized. In this category, you'll mainly find houses that are logically suitable for golden hamsters.
What is the function of a golden hamster house?
Sleeping and sheltering are essential. Many golden hamsters also use a house to gather nesting material and store supplies. Multi-room houses are often the best fit for this.
Do you need to be able to look inside the house?
Not necessarily. It sometimes helps to draw the dimensions so you get a feel for the volume. A house can be quite sheltered, as long as it's spacious enough and has secure entrances.
Which material is best?
Size and safety are paramount for your hamster. Wood is popular (natural look), ceramic is a great cool-down spot, and plastic/resin is easy to keep clean.
How do I clean a wooden house?
Do not soak in water. Apply locally and, for odors/urine, preferably use an enzyme cleaner, such as urine spray .
